Sony or Panasonic?

I have narrowed buying a 50-52" TV down to the Panasonic PT52LCX66 and the Sony KDF 50E2000. They seem to have comparable features, with the Sony having an extra HDMI and RF slot and the Panasonic having a PC connection and SD slot. The Panasonic has a 3,000:1 contrast ratio and it doesn't say what the Sony's is. I am unable to get to store that has these models on display, so I am wondering what you think about the choice between these two sets. The Panasonic is $999.99 and the Sony is $1,219.99, but I can go either way depending on which set is the best quality and has the best picture.

I have the 61" version of the Panny and its nice but SSE is really bad.

If you have not seen these displays, I would not buy them. What looks good to one person may not to another, and each technology has its own pros and cons. These are both RP LCD, and if you have not seen them, you cannot tell whether you will be happy with the black levels and contrast (both are better with other technologies), or whether the silk screen effects (SSE) are acceptable to you. Have you looked at other technologies, such as DLP or LCOS? If not, how do you know that LCD is the best choice for you? Reading and asking questions is a start, but one should not buy such a big ticket item without seeing for oneself. IMO, 720p DLP is a better technology at a similar price, and 1080p DLP or LCOS is even better (at a slightly higher price, depending on the model).

These models are not in stock within 3 hours of where I live, so that is why I am asking for opinions. I've seen a variety of DLP sets at friends' houses and the rainbow effect drives me absolutely nuts, so that is why I am not interested in DLP. Plasma is simply out of my price range, so that is why I'm looking hard at the two models I mentioned.

If you see rainbows, then stay away from DLP. It really then comes down to RP LCD and LCOS. LCOS is better, but more expensive. Again, I would be wary of buying if you have not at least seen these 2 technologies in action, even if you haven't seen these specific models.

Yeah, that's what I gathered from reading through the various threads. I really couldn't spend a whole lot, so I went with the Sony Wega 50" RP LCD. For some reason those RP LCD sets on the whole look pretty darn good to me, even though I haven't seen the specific model I bought in action. I've always had good luck in making electronic purchases by putting faith in forums I visit. I appreciate people like you who offer their expertise on forums. It makes becoming somewhat informed on the various issues of products much easier than simply talking to sales people who are either ignorant or just trying to make a sale.

I haven't seen the 2 models you're looking at, but I have a similar but older Panasonic RP-LCD (50LC14) and I can give you a little feedback on it, particularly on the 2 features you saw as being advantageous on the Panasonic. I rarely use the SD slot on my TV even though I do quite a bit of digital photography. My pictures just don't look very good when viewed that way. I don't know if it's the way the Panasonic scales them or what. Also the TV's slideshow software isn't very flexible.

On the other hand I use the VGA input all the time, and I'm very glad I got a TV that has it. It's really handy to be able to quickly and easily plug in any PC to view pictures, look at web sites with a group, etc. The VGA input gives you a much sharper picture than an S-video connection from a laptop.
