I purchased this player yesterday when a retail store matched an online vendor for price. I had been in the market for a DVD player for some time, considering the Samsung up convert players (as they matched my Samsung Plasma) and the Oppo players. However, Samsung performance and Oppo appearance kept me from buying those players.
Whats strange with the CP704 is it doesn't state clearly on any packaging that this is an up convert DVD player. Most brands try and get this across, but not here. I was a little concerned that this would not up convert over HDMI, but when I played back DVDs there is no problem. The picture quality (from my limited exposure to up convert players) at 1080i looks fantastic. The delivery of sound also seems improved over my old source. There are no issues with lip sync, or stuttering with the DVD.
The player has some great features, notably being able to change discs while still playing a disc. The memory function stores DVD points, so you can resume from that chapter even if you remove the disc. However, I imagine these features are somewhat common now on DVD players / changers (its been some time since I bought one).
So far, I am very impressed. The only negatives I have are:
- Not being able to play SACD's.
- Not being able to tell which of the 6 discs are loaded or unloaded (might be useful if you haven't accessed the player for a while).
- Depth of 17". Not really an issue for me as its in tucked in a cabinet looking very smart.
I'm really interested to see personal opinions of this player and collect further feedback on the settings people are using. No doubt, from the Sony, Panny and Oppo fans I expect some bashing on my product, much in the same way I did when I bought my Samsung HP S4253 from Panny fans. 9 months later, I still wouldn't trade that for any other Plasma in that price range. I'm hoping my DVD player proves another good purchase.

I keep the sharpness on the tv in the middle, but have never played w/ the Onkyo's video settings.
, and doesn't fit in the rack, so for testing i set it up ghetto like on the box, and put 6 cds in (orginal and burned CDRs)...and hit play..
