Madden 07 PS2 vs. Madden 07 PS3

Hello to all Gamers,

I was thinking about getting this game and looking for advice on which one would be best to purchase for the ps3. I know the recent update fixed some ps3 issues with ps2 games and cc has the ps2 version on sale for $22.49 vs $59.99 for the ps3 version. I have never played any of the Madden series games and am looking for the pro's/con's of each version while playing them on the ps3. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many people will tell you PS2 but you can read more about the PS3 version here and why people dislike it.

Having experience with both versions, I say go with the PS3 version (as long as you're playing through an HDTV).

Yes, its missing the "owner" mode and a few other features, but you'll get over it once you see the graphical differences (The graphics are not NEARLY as bad as that other thread makes it sound!).

The other main complaint is hear about the PS3 version is that they changed the controls, and my response to that is "GET OVER IT". Once you play with the PS3 controls for about a week you'll realize how much better they are. They changed them for a reason.

If you dont want to spend to much you can also pick up Madden06 for the ps3 for around $20.00.

Finally someone else backs what I said the controls being an issue is non existent because you can make them anyway you want. Go with the one for PS3 better game in a different way the two don't play the same so they are hard to compare.

He did not say they are not an issue because you can change them he said you can get use to them. And I suppose over time I could be forced to as well. BTW...I got rid of my copy so fast but IS there really a way to change the controls? I thought someone posted that there was not.

I guess people debate because PS2 version's was just like it always was and teh PS3 version was just a botched up XBOX 360 port over with the same controller layout.

All disagreements aside...I think it will be very intersting to see what they do for the '08 version. Regardless of so, I will just have to suck it up and learn how to play it on the '08 version because unfortunately that is the only football game out there for the PS3 with no others in sight for obvious licensing rreasons.

Having played both, I suggest getting the PS2 version and wait to get Madden 08 on PS3.

To me, it just seams that they rushed the product to get a version of Madden on PS3. Plus the PS2 version is cheaper.

Having owned both -- the graphics on the PS3 version are far and away better on a HDTV than the '06 PS2 version. I would get the PS3 for that reason alone, although I hate not being able to hold a draft in franchise mode on this version.

I agree with you on the graphics part 100%. But to me, graphics are a lower priority than gameplay and substance. You can make any game on the ps3 look pretty, but if the gameplay sux, then I don't enjoy the game too much. And to me the game was rushed. I like having the depth and tight controls of the PS2 version. But I can't wait for Madden08 on the PS3.

Actually the graphics on the PS3 Madden can stand to be a lot better. How about more than two different looking coaches..a little more white in the flesh color, and different body types for all that matter. We are in 2007! Let's make it real!

Do you think everybody in the NFL looks like the Incredible Hulk and runs without moving their torso? That's just the tip of the iceberg if you really want to critique the graphics in the PS3 version.

I can assure you that side-by-side the PS3 game looks much better than the PS2 game. If you're trying to consider how "real" the graphics are, then does everybody in the NFL have little jaggies sticking out of them like the PS2 version? I can't believe that people can still play with those graphics Seriously, ESPN 2k5 had more impressive visuals than PS2 07...thats 2 years behind!

And for those of you have high hopes for the PS3 Madden 08...while they'll (hopefully) add in the missing owner/franchise features, don't count on them reverting the controls back to the "PS2 style". They're here to stay. Why? Because they feel more natural. While they're not what you're "used to", they make much more sense, and I would imagine that someone new to Madden would have an easier time grasping them than the old controls. I say get Madden 07 for the PS3 right now just so you can get used to the controls for next years version.

Oh, and as far as the price difference goes... I bought my copy of Madden 07 (PS3) in mint condition off of eBay for $35 shipped, and I regularly see copies go for around $40. Just keep your eyes open.

Thanks to all for your responses! It looks like there is a difference of opinions on the two versions- as I expected. Slightly leaning towards the ps3 version. As for the controls I don't really see a big deal as far as I am concerned because I never really learned or played madden. I guess I am getting the football itch now that there is only one game left and then that's it for awhile. Graphics on the ps3 version-I would think be better-very important to me- but how much better? Learning the ps3 version probably looks better to get ready for madden 08. You guys seem to have alot of experience with the game-new and older versions so I value your opinions. Anyone no when 2008 is coming out? In the beginning of that year? I think I will wait a little to decide what version to get now. I think I can always get 2007 ps2 for pretty cheap and I will keep looking for ps3 2007 at a good price. Keep the pro's and con's coming.

That's a strawman argument. Nobody here is claiming the graphics are better on the PS2. I'm arguing that there's more to graphics than adding more polygons and lighting. EA needs to hire better animators and artists. Human beings do not run like they do in the PS3 version unless they're on a treadmill. Also a whole team of humans beings do not run down the field with the same exact motion. I hope '08 is better.

the PS3 version is way better and less boring than the PS2 version to me, because the graphics are way better and so are the gameplay, and i liked the performance institute too.

No official release date has been released but it usually comes out second week in August. I would suggest putting down a 5 dollar deposit at your local EBGames / Game Stop store. First shipment usually sells out.

In regards to the debate of whether you should get the PS2 vs. PS3 version, just rent them both and find out for yourself.

In my honest opinion, PS3 is too new of a platform and game developers are still trying to get used to developing for it. Most of the @ lauch games aren't must haves (with the exceptin of Fall of Man). Again, it really up to you.

I've played every Madden since '91 and I have worked in the video game industry... so I know a bit about this game.

In my opinion PS3 Madden 07 is terrible from a gameplay perspective. Sure the graphics are higher resolution, but the animation is sub-par and the game isn't complete in all areas. For example you can't use custom button layout in all game modes. The responsiveness of the controls is very slow. I'm not talking about the controller layout but the precision of movement when you try to move your player around. I took the time to learn the new layout, which does have some benefits over previous versions, but the animation structure of the characters is difficult to control. To be fair, this is a trend in the PS2 version of Madden as well (each year seems a little worse), it's much worse in the PS3 version. An example of this is when you juke. You have to run through the whole juke animation before you can move into another animation. Since there are many animations that last many frames your players get stuck moving in ways that you don't want them to go. This makes the game experience hurkey jerky and unresponsive. It's frustrating to try and move a character and get no response. Sure, you can learn to account for the lack of responsiveness, but that's not football. The NFL is all about speed and this game just feels as though you're playing in a vat of molasses.

If you want to play online (by far the best game experience of Madden aside from friends on the couch), then it isn't even close which version to get. Online, The PS3 Madden experience is like playing the game with boxing gloves on. It's laggy and makes the game so unresponsive, it's pretty much unplayable. From what I hear, the 360 got a network code patch that fixed the issues on that platform, but I think there was a bug in the game in the network code for both versions. Maybe EA will patch, but I highly doubt it since the end of football season is almost here.

Lastly, if you do get the PS2 version, you will need to put your PS3 in a DMZ on your network to avoid connectivity issues online. I lost about 20 games with disconnects before I remembered that I had to keep my PS2 in the DMZ for the last few Maddens. Also, if you get a error that says No adaptor present keep trying. For some reason it takes a few tries to get through every once in a while.
