Soundsplinter 18-incher??? Is this for real?

Thread Starter
Is it actually going to happen? This could be a very cool driver for us to get excited about right? Will it perform in an LLT adequately? I guess that's subjective as its not even released yet.

Damn, if it actually happens, that would be tres cooool.
Yes it is real.
Id like to see it competitively priced with the FI Car Audio 18" subs. That would make for some very interesting big woofer choices.
Mid $300 range is what I read....
info? T/S info?? release date???
ARGH! STOP TALKING ABOUT THE 18!

I dont want to hear about the TC or SS 18 until there REALLY is a release for it. T/S, anyone?
Sooo....Im gonna take it that there is NO real information on this?
How do you define real?

From Mike (date: 1/19/07) in the SS section on HTS:

Quote:

Unfortunately, the basket and cone have been taking forever and a year to get from two independent parts suppliers, though it looks like they are finally geared up to produce what we need and ship it on over to the assembly facility. Nevertheless, it will be a little while longer before those parts are in, assembled, and tested. If I were hard pressed for an estimate, I would suggest late February / early March. The price-point should be in the mid $300's.

More information will be made available as it is deemed reliable!

Possibly a concrete "this is when it is coming out and here's the specs..." would do it for me.

None of this Exodus Audio-like, "Ehhhh...well, it MAY come out and this and this..." and then a year or two of nothing, nothing, nothing....Oh! Coming soon ...still? Ugh...

Ascendant Audio was blowing smoke up our asses for over a year and never released the Alliance 18 (specially made 18 for IBs) and the Havok wasn't ever release publicly...just some "Hey, we got some left over...you want em?" attitude on their seldomly updated website.

I just have this pet-peeve on Vaporware....I hated not ever getting Duke Nukem Forever...can you tell?

Understandable..it does seem as though Mikes time frame has stayed consistent with prior projections though. With the way things are, I'll be surprised if the 18" does make it's debut in late February, but my bet is it's going to happen at a decent price??
Well Scott, is the info I posted above not "real" enough? I think it is.

This isn't a vaporware situation.
It'll be interesting to see what "competitively priced" means, as I've been giving a second look to those Fi Q18 drivers (not for me, just in general), and the price seems very nice, even without an exotic low distortion motor technology, which the RL-p drivers don't have either. Competition is always a good thing.
Yeah those Fi Q18's are interesting aren't they? 27mm of Xmax puts a little hair on their chest.
Those FI Q18's on paper look pretty impressive.

There are a few videos on RealmOfExcursion.com and a few on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5BzUlE18u0

48 seconds into this video it shows the doors and roof flexing.

So they have SPL capabilities. I wonder how they sound.

The IB cult uses them alot. They are one of the best $/liter (beat only by the lower displacement but more affordable MJ18)

Fi Audio actually will modify the 18's so they become better suited to IB. I believe they try and get the Q closer to .5. It's definately an unlisted option not shown on the website.

Agreed! Scott is great at helping DIY'ers with "custom" drivers (can you say 4 18's and around 26L of swept volume ? )

Someone tap me on the shoulder when that happens.

Hmm, sounds like an 18" based on the TC 3000. Hopefully the suspension is a bit looser.
Hmmm....such nice features!

The arrival of my tax return, the supposed "changes" to the TC2k and its availablity ....news next week.

This is about to get tight.

Too good for words, I have 4 Q18s driven by 2400 Watts (EP2500).

Scott from FiCaraudio will make them custom for you and give you a deal if you talk nice to him

There isnt a better price/performance speaker out there for DIY. Im shocked people still dont know about them. Sure the MJs are cheaper but the amount of displacement Q18s put out is simply amazing.

You want to feel compression, stand underneath mine

here are the Q18 specs

Specs are:

Re 2.8 Ohms
Fs 22.0 Hz
Qms 5.44
Qes .56
Qts .51

I'd sure be a good idea of he did.

With an Xmech of 47mm one would think it nearly impossible to bottom this driver in a vented/sealed DIY project even with gobs of power...Yes, even without dedicated highpass protection below Fb...

If the price and T/S are right Soundsplinter will make a killing with these Rl-p 18's.

The Fi Q 18's look great as well!

Last year 15's were hot, now we're starting to see more 18" options. What next?

Considering they'll originally be coming from TC, they'll probably be in the same crates that the 3000s and others are shipped in. Right?

There isn't much of a reason to think otherwise

One very disappointing thing about that post is that there's no mention of a Faraday ring in the motor. I can't imagine that people designing systems with pretensions to high fidelity would consider a woofer without them.
