HANNspree Xv 37 - Page 15

hey guys - new on the forum - i also have the 37 - and i also spoke with chris many times about the cable box issue...

i have some news though - i upgraded from the 32 inch model - which did not suffer the same formatting problems - so it is definitely not the cable box...my and chris' best guess is that the tv just has a firmware issue that will be resolved w/n the next 6 months - i saw somewhere up there on the posts that someone set a macro on their universal - by any chance did you use a harmony? could you post your settings? delay, whow exactly you did it, and if the workaround actually makes it practical - or still annoying?

this tv really is perfect except for that 1 flaw..

thanks!
I have a macro on my universal remote but it is not a harmony.
I did not need to do anything with timings. I simply programmed the sequence to stretch which I believe is something like "menu,up,up,up,up,right, exit" and then did another button to revert to normal. It's not TOO annoying but I dont like having the cable box upconvert everything to 1080i and then have the TV downconvert it to 720p. Too many cooks messing with the signal.

Even if there is a firmware update how will we get it? We have no USB port or service port on the 37" TV, unless there is one internally, which they'd have to send someone to my house for.

When Chris at Hannspree tells me I am out of luck for now I will go to a Cablevision store and see about another model of cable box perhaps the older 4000HD or one with DVI and then use an adapter. I just hope they have one.

Have you tried another cable box on your 37?
any other PS3 owners out there tried 1080p with their Xv37? i manually unchecked the 1080i and checked the 1080p box and the thing worked. 720p images still suck but I don't have to deal with the flickering horizontal lines in 1080i anymore. the Xv37 even displays the yellow text "1080p" inside big grey info box that pops up.
ive had the 32 inch model and this box worked flawlessly -- i dont think that this box is the problem but rather the tv has the problem - the ybpbr input wont do this so i think i might switch to that...

i think there is a usb port in there somewhere - isnt there?
There is no USB port on the 37 inch.

Yes, it works fine with the component input but that is where my DVD player is connected.
Whats the point of 3 HDMI ports if they're messed up?
I am going to ride them until this is resolved one way or the other.
It's unacceptable. I am not waiting 6 months either.

I've suspected from the time I got this TV that their HDMI implementation was less than perfect. Any 720p signal on the HDMI looks like crap but is fine with component or the QAM tuner.

I thought about swapping the 4250 for a 4200 with DVI but then noticed in the Hannspree manual that the audio input for HDMI (when using DVI) is the "pc audio" port, which of course is used by my HTPC on the VGA port.
Even if I used a splitter on that port I'd hear the cable box when using my HTPC unless I powered off the cable box. Thats just as annoying as having to manually stretch the image like I do now.
but ive decided that i dont watch hdtv all that much - and when i do - i switch it back to normal by turning the tv on and off - a pain but cest la vie -

in hindsight i should have stuck with the 32

but all and all its a fine tv - i might switch hdtv to ybpbr tho - youve tried it and it works without fail?
Yes, component has no problem switching from 1080 or 720 down to 480.

Update from Hannspree on my HDMI problem. Apparently it is specific to the 4250HD box.

Yesterday evening in our conference call they confirmed that they were able to duplicate the problem, but they asked for some time to try and identify the problem. They didn't give me a time frame but I get the impression that it may take a few weeks before we have a fix that has been tested and is available to distribute
post #429 of 469
Hi again.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to hook up a regular old school Nintendo ES to this TV? The only things I have hooked up to it so far are my 360 (VGA port) and my Directv hd recorder, through the HDMI port.

I couldn't figure out how to hook up this NES. Anyone know?

Hey guys,

I have a 32" Hannspree with some surround sound speakers hooked up into the RCA audio outputs. The problem is that I'm getting almost no sound out of them. I know the speakers are good because I've hooked them to another tv. Did anyone else have this problem?

Well, you aren't really going to get surround sound from the RCA outputs.

Is audio out set to "on" in the menu?
Well, yeah I guess not lol. It's just a couple of wall speakers for the back side of the room that's fairly large. And yes, the audio out is set to on.

Got this update from Chris at Hannspree on 6/29:

We are testing a new version of firmware today to make sure that there are no adverse effects on the rest of the TV functions. It appears to correct the problem of the image shifting/being distorted in all of our tests. I'm hoping that we will have an approved version available for you within the next couple of weeks. It does take a little time to develop the software and test it thoroughly; thanks for your patience during this process.

And when I asked how I would update firmware with no USB port on the TV:

We would have to ship you a PCB, a flash drive, and instructions for the upload. You would need to hook the PCB up to a USB port on a PC or laptop.

That should be interesting. Stay tuned!

Huh ?

PCB = printed circuit board ? Hooks up to a USB port ?

And then you have to flash the board from firmware loaded on the flash drive ?

And then you have to replace the PCB in your TV ?

And your TV will remain under warranty after you open it up and do this ?

I'm thinking perhaps the PCB has some connector on it to interface with a connector inside, to act as a bridge between the usb and tv.
I could be completely wrong. Time will tell, and I will keep you posted.
Damn ripple, hope that fixes your problem..

How is everyone's 37" Hannspree so far?
Change of plans- now he said they will send a tech to do it. Hopefully we will schedule that in the next week or so.

Besides this annoying issue which is specific to the STB I have, I am pretty happy with this TV, especially considering the price. I am still amazed at the quality of HD content.
My tv is still great... i mostly play 360 on it during the weekends and some during the week... both games and dvds. SD content still looks like pixelated garbage on it haha but thats to be expected i guess *shrug*

***Though, i still have yet to try anything with HDMI on it so i still cant comment on that. Everything HD from the 360 looks terrific on it though.

One of my friends got a new Sony 1080p 50" LCD, and i honestly thought my hannspree looked just as good as his. He even remarked on how great my picture quality was on HD content.

Update:
Hannspree is ready to schedule a technician to come out and update my firmware, hopefully fixing the strange issue that exists with the Sci Atl 4250HD box.

Mine's still working great. It has the hottest ATSC tuner I have seen, and I have access to 7 other tuners from USB to STB. Nothing else comes close for OTA reception.

Did they ever show up and re-flash your firmware? How big a deal is it?
There was a delay in them getting the hardware needed to flash the firmware.
I am now in posession of a flash drive with the new firmware and update tool (MTK), as well as an interesting little homemade board consisting of a USB interface and a VGA interface, though it says USB-RS232 interface on it. I will be attempting the update tonight.
I've never seen a VGA port used for serial data. This should be interesting.

Are you sure it's a VGA port? RS232 and VGA look really similar.
Ripple,

Before you attempt the flash you may want to check the Factory menu for your current Firmware version. My set is JT0237U1V02. Then you will be able to confirm a successful update after your flash.

To access the Factory menu press the menu button on your remote to get to the normal set up menus and then press 991. I'm wondering if the first item on the Factory menu (EEPROM Init) will be used to initiate the flash upgrade.

Please let us know what the procedure was and how successful it was in curing your problem. Good luck !

I wondered that myself. Unless they are having him open up the set I could find no RS-232 port that is externally accessible.

Both are D-shell connectors but easy to tell apart. RS-232 (serial) has only two rows of pins (9 total) while VGA has three rows of five pins (15 total).
The board is a "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port"

I couldnt get it to talk to the TV though, only the laptop on the usb side.
I assume the tv should be on and set to VGA.
The programmer is the MTK tool for MT8105 , MT1389 or MT8205. I am also unsure of what platform to choose.
The updated firmware will be JT0237U1V04_0621

Anyone ever use this?
It tries to Init the rs232 and just waits.
I have an email in to my boy Chris.
PS- Factory Init resets everything to factory defaults. That was a pain. LOL

UPDATE:

A technician came to my house today.
With no instructions, no laptop, and no clue.

Called Hannspree, and as usual they were no help. When they called me back they claimed they still did not have instructions from Taiwan.

So I put my engineer hat on.
There are 2 DIP switches on the upload board and I found the combination to allow the TV to talk to my laptop!

I was able to backup the old firmware:

LOG: Start to backup
LOG: Init Rs232 ...
LOG: Flash Type - EON(EN29F002/EN29F002N)
LOG: Reading ...
LOG: Finished!(0000)

And then load the new firmware:

LOG: Start to upgrade
LOG: Init Rs232 ...
LOG: Flash Type - EON(EN29F002/EN29F002N)
LOG: Erasing ...
LOG: Updating...
LOG: Begin : Thu Sep 20 12:44:37 2007
LOG: end : Thu Sep 20 12:46:14 2007
Finished!(0000)

I confirmed through the 991 service menu that the new firmware is on.

And guess what?

THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS!

I may restore the old firmware but the backup image is only 256k while the new firmware is 1.04mb so I am not sure of the variance.
Interesting!

I come back to this thread from time to time to check things out about the TV...

Were you ever able to resolve the problem?

Have you noticed any new/improved features?
Funny you should visit here today-
Another tech came out today with a laptop and directions. So he did the firmware update too (just to prove to Hannspree that it was done by a "pro" and not just little ol me) and it did not solve the image shift problem.

There are other fixes though, for sure.
There is no longer the white noise from bad edge enhancement in 720p mode. There must have been other changes as well because I saved my settings prior to the update and they are completely off now. I had to recalibrate every input. The 720p mode looks amazing now with a drop of overscan that was not there before but no big deal. Signals that come in at 1080 seem a little softer. 480p content looks a lot better too, with much less noise and better color (not washed out as it was before).
If I had to choose between the firmware that shipped with the set and what I have now I would choose the new firmware. I would share it with all of you but without this upload board you can't use it.

So, back to the drawing board for Hannspree Taiwan- they originally claimed to reproduce the problem and fixed it with this firmware. Maybe my 4250HD box has different software then what they used to test. That will likely be their next excuse.

There are no new features or functions.
