My set up, looking for advice

Here is my set up for my music server that I am currently using. I have about 300 cd's rip to a 160 gig hardrive in wma lossless. I use to have it on a 80 gig in wma vb but now I am doing nothing with the 80 gig. Both drives are connect via usb to my main computer in the living from and from there I steam to my dedicated theater using a roku sound bridge, which isn't bad. For my living setup I just a long analog cambles from my computer to the cd input on living room receiver.

Now I would like to do (hopefully I can get some advice) is to get a large networked hard drive where I could ripped my cd's using the wav format and find a new device to stream music to my living room receiver. Now my questions are:

1. Is there any point into converting from wma lossless to wav format? I'm Trying to just get the best sound possible.

2. I searched this forum all over but I still don't have an idea as to which networked hard drive should I use. Do you guys have any suggestions?

3 I want to ad another streaming device to my living set up so I can select my files from the couch with having to go back to the computer or set up playlists. I don't have a problem with my roku other than I would like to use my television to see my audio files. So again, do you guys have any suggestions?

4 This is somewhat another issue but I am also looking for something to transfer my files to my car. Does the Ipod or zune play wma lossless? If not I thought about using my non-used 80 gig drive to store a copy of my collection in aac or similar format for transfer to an ipod or something else. Question is it possible to convert from wav or wma lossless, to aac or wma compressed?

Thanks for the help.

is this the wrong forum for these questions?

1.) No, unless the player you eventually choose doesn't support WMA. I still wouldn't go from WMA to WAV. The file sizes would be enormous with no improvement in quality.

2.) Networked HDDs are usually really slow. You already have a computer running that could be used as a file server. Stick with that.

3.) You've come to the right place to research this on your own.

4.) Your question doesn't make any sense to me.

You aren't getting a lot of responses because your questions are either open-ended or don't indicate much research. If I were looking for a media player because I wanted to play lossless WMAs and see something on my TV, I'd go make a short list of which ones did this and then start reading about them. Your questions about the Zune and iPod could be answered with thirty seconds at the Google prompt, and people here aren't gonna do that for you.

I'll tell you that most of the media players that are hot here have no-frills interfaces without even ID3 tag support for music files-- having things displaying on your TV doesn't necessarily mean you're going to get WMP-caliber graphics and visualizations.

Thanks for the response. I quess I should be more consice on my questions. As far as the most research on this forum it just seems as everything is geared towards media servers which I don't even no where to began. The sight was helpful in helping me set up my music server about year and a half ago. So I wil try again.

About the networked hardrive I'm interested because everyonce in a while I have to restart my computer to get from acting quirky. Which may interupt using my roku if it's being used at the time. It was on this sight that I learned about networked hardrives, didn't know they existed unitl I came here. Anyway I was going get a western digital networked drive until I read some forums suggesting that they were slow. But, unless I am reading wrong, that there are some people using them. So I quess my question is: If I were to use a networked hardrive as the base of a music server what kind of quirks or problems should I expect? If this kind of set up is not a bad idea are there any rocommedations to what brand of network harddrive to use?

As for a device to sream from in my living room I'm not looking for any special graphics or anything I just wanted with a osd menu so I could see my files to select. As I mentioned my roku that't in my dedcated theater is fine except if I were to use it in my living room it would be quite difficult to see from across the room. So I looking to devices like a networked dvd player or a d-link media device like 520 or 510.

As for the I-pod or zune, I also would like to transfer some files from my server to a device like one these. Ipod I know uses the aac codec, which means that I would have to convert from wma lossless correct? The zune supports wma but I don't know if it's safe to assume that it also supports wma lossless. If not I assume that it means that If I were use this option that I would still need to convert the files correct? Is conveting files from one format easy to do?

One more overall question is there anything to be gained by ripping to wav format instead of wma lossless.

Finally thanks for response, I didn't mean imply that I wasn't doing my part in researching. It just didn't seem to anybody out there that's in a similar situation as I am in.

Thanks B Posey

Look at this thread regarding WMA lossless w/Ipod and Zune.

Buffalo Technology has family of networked hard drives that is very widely used and works reliably. They also have models called " Multimedia Storage Servers" with extra media software pre-installed. Good luck.
