Yeah. It seems like Rona and Home Depot are about the same price so might as well go Canadian...haha. Lucky I went to the big orange to get the lights....nice screw up on their part...6 of them for 25$. The stage isnt in place. Its in four separate pieces will be bolted together when mud and taping are done. I dont know what goes underneath it. Any suggestions. As far as filling it with sand I might just fill the two middle cavities where the sub will be sitting. My center and front L and R will be off the ground so I dont think the sand would do anything. I as thinking insulation. I have lots of left over carpet and underlay I may put that under the stage. What do you think

Thanks
Ryan

As for under the stage, I've seen some use acoustikmat or other variants, and others use 30lb roofing felt and/or beads of caulking (dried) to decouple the stage from the floor. I opted for the roofing felt method (had lots left over), but I can't really say what the benefits of each option would be. I guess it comes down to how particular you want to be with 'acoustical' stuff and your budget! I went with sand for the sub platforms and can say that the sound deadening provided by that is immense - good stable platforms for the sub to push off, without coloring the sound. Mind you, I didn't have near as much cavity space to fill in as you do

Perhaps someone could jump in with some technical pros/cons for the various options?

How thick is 30lb roofing felt?? I could use the caulking method I suppose. I dont know..still a little aways from that yet me thinks!! HAHHA

Hi Everyone. I am not a fan of the ceiling mounted projectors so I am building my projector into my bulkhead at the back of the room and I am wondering how to build it/frame it?? Here is a pic of what is built so far.

i have just purchased a Panasonic AX100 and I know the lens should be as close to the centreline of the room as possible, but I am just wondering how I should box the interior of the bulkhead in for ventilation, etc??

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Ryan

Thanks

Ryan,

They usually have vendor recommendations in the manual for what you need space wise around the PJ. I used to have a 900 and I found it didn't run very hot not sure about the newer 1000. If it runs hot you will likely have to do something for ventilation with that set up.

Cheers

I'm right with you.
Don't get how people take great extremes and thoughts on their theater, but for the projector they just buy a mount over the web, and it looks like a small car hanging from their ceiling.

I'm building soffit for this reason (and crown + rope light) and I gotta figure airflow. I have a cool unfinished area behind the projector, and I'm think of the Sanyo Z5, it's the only one I found that takes air in from the rear and blows it out the right side. The Panny blow out the front, so you gotta not only have the lens opening, but basically the entire front for warm air discharge.

Im with ya there george

I dont mind the front opening. Thats what was planning anyways. I have an unfinished furnace room behind the projector so i thought a vent or tsomething into the other room would work well. Some sound may pass through but the thats ok. But as far as construction waht do you suggest. Drywalling the interior or plywood?? Any suggestions

That looks really cool Ryan! What software did you use for that???

I like your sofft-mount idea. I'll likely do something similar with my room. Though I'd love a chance to stop by and see your finished room in person to see how well it all came together...

I am just trying to figure out builin the soffet now.

How are you going to calculate the exact height and position of the projector? Did it come with instructions on how to figure that all out or is it gonna be trial and error?

Well I did a test run when I had my room the other direct\\ion and it worked perfectly so Im guessin it will be a little trial and error

Yeah that's kind of what I figured it'd end up being. There's probably a way to figure out mathematically where the optimum location would be but that hurts my brain

my brain doesnt even compute half this stuff.

Just got off the phone with Ruben from SMX Screen, and man he is great to deal with. Placed my order for 120" Diag. SMX Frame and I cant wait.

Awesome!!! So curious to see the SMX screen up close. I'm leaning heavily towards buying some SMX screen material and I suspect seeing yours will push me over the edge

Did you order the full meal deal (frame inc) or just material?

I already have the material here. Ordered the frame tonight
post #108 of 301
So you got the green light for the frame after all, congrats!!!

I'm sure you'll be extremely pleased with it, seems like a great product.

That and the fact that Ruben is a great guy to deal with.

Ryan,

I see you took the easy (and smart ) way out same as I did. I'm hoping to get my SMX frame soon and complete the basement.

Yeah mine will be a few weeks since there are a nice bit of people ahead of me. But thats cool..im still a little aways from that. He was so accomodating that it made it really easy to make a decision.

Going to run my speaker wire to the fronts soon hopefully and use your plates. All the drywall is up in the room except for the bulkhead and my dvd/equip room is drywalled with temporary lighting. I am learning a lot as I go along here.

Since I am not building the steel frame now, how do you build the wall to hold this screen frame?? Any suggestions

Hey everyone I need help trying to place my heating vent and cold air return to my room

In the first pic you are facing the SMX screen and the heat is running down the right so I can just pull off there somewhere and on the left is the cold air return i installed for upstairs and can pull a vent off there.

Second pic facing the rear where soffet mounted projector will sit as well as the couches, etc.

Any suggestions

Thanks

Anything???

Well, as far as cold air and heat. All finished. Now I am in the process of drywalling the soffet where the projector will be mounted. Except for the projector and opening, the soffet it just for looks, could it be used as a bass trap of some kind??

Thanks

Ryan,

I've got a different set up then yours in that I'm just using in-walls behind the screen. I'll likely just hang the screen on the wall like a picture (but more securely held of course). I'm still tossing around the idea of pushing it out 2 to 6" to help minimize comb filtering but its likely that my audio guy will work out those problems how ever I set up the screen (well to my untrained ear I'm sure )

If your going to build a second decoupled wall in front of the existing wall (which is what I did) then you can just leave a "hole" for your screen to fit into when it arrives.

Just a thought.
Cheers

Hey where are the new pics?
Ryan,

The room is coming along nicely. I love the fact that you have room to hide your rear mounted projector. I really wanted to do that but it just didn't work out.
