FYI, as long as you have MyHD.exe and MyIRC.exe (and also maybe CW_EPG.exe) set to run as administrator, you don't need to turn off UAC. However, UAC being on will prevent MyIRC from starting automatically at boot, and you'll have to allow the program permission every time you run it.

Hi,

I am preparing a detailed report checklist to be included with each report of success and failure to help us sort out if there are differences between the different versions of "Vista" and our systems that make differences.

There are incompatibilities between reports that are being made and many crucial details are being left out to allow the reports to be understood.

Please hold off on more reports until I post the report checklist later today (I hope).

There are several things that need to be checked that may explain the inconsistencies that I see in the reports.

Well, as I've said, I've had everything working since I first tried Vista RC1, with UAC enabled, and the MyHD.exe, MyIRC.exe, and TitanTVHelper.exe set to run as administrator and set for XP SP2 compatibility. CW_EPG.exe and CW_Mon.exe have the same settings. The only issue that you will have is that MyIRC will not start automatically this way. You'll have to click on a icon in the system tray, and allow it to start with administrator privileges every time you reboot.

There's pretty much no way of preventing this, because MyIRC needs to access the registry and with UAC enabled, unlicensed programs can't do that. I in fact turned UAC off recently, because quite frankly, if you know what you're doing with your computer, it has absolutely no benefits.

This has continued working for RC2 and the retail build, so I'm not entirely sure what the problem is. From what I understand, the remote program has some issues with the firewall built in, but I turn off the Windows Firewall anyway.

Regarding your goals, those seem very lofty to me. Does XP even allow you to do this stuff? (Namely, starting the MyHD program to record, without logging into your password protected account.)

I'm running the Ultimate version.
Old computer, but it runs Vista fine:

Shuttle SN41G2 (Nforce 2 motherboard, Soundstorm built in sound)
AMD Athlon XP 2700
1 Gig DDR3200 RAM
Western Digital 120 gig hard drive
ATI x800XL (256 megs memory, AGP)
MyHD MDP-130
Westinghouse LVM-37W3 1080p monitor

My video card uses the DVI out, and I don't have any additional slots, so I set it to dual monitor, and switch inputs on my monitor through a remote macro every time I switch.

My ONLY issue, which is monitor related, and also occurred in XP, is that in 1080i mode, it compresses the height of the image to seem like its 2.35:1 ratio, but using the fill function of the monitor fixes that. Because of the not so great deinterlacing of the monitor though, I stick to 720p anyway.

I think that basically has every relevant piece of information, and some irrelevant as well.

I guess though that because this is my only PC, your issues with doing things automatically after a power failure don't apply to me.

Hi,

With the release of the new "MyHD" software I am starting to prepare my HDTV for normal use with Windows "Vista".

The result will be a duplicate of my Windows "XP SP2" currently running system as described in "MyHD on Vista Goal 1: Power failure recovery".

I do not believe that there are any "MyHD" issues that would cause problems in meeting this goal.

I do have other issues that may be problems, mainly the lack of "Vista" drivers for my sound chip and second RAID controller.

The "Fusion" software may be a problem but they are working on it and will continue to do so.

As I will not be doing a "Clean" new install of the "MyHD" but instead trying to remove all traces of the "MyHD" first there may be items that might be different from a "Clean" new first install.

I will be trying to document each step during the process with the result being a guide for new "MyHD" users on Windows "Vista".

Please comment as I present this work.

New "MyHD" on "Vista" users!

Please print out the Guide and report any differences that you see during the process and any questions that you have so we can build a good guide for all persons, some that may be less experienced than some of us.

When I have completed the switch to Windows "Vista" Ultimate and have been running it successful for a while I will be doing a "Clean" install of Windows "Vista" Home Premium and then a "Clean" install of the "MyHD".

I expect that while Windows "Vista" Ultimate is in the lead currently, Windows "Vista" Home Premium will overtake it in numbers of users.

Hi,

From the "Windows Vista Inside Out" Book:

http://www.microsoft.com/MSPress/books/9361.aspx

Users of the Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions of Windows Vista can use the
Local Security Policy console to modify the behavior of UAC.
Start Local Security Policy(Secpol msc) and open Security Settings\\Local Policies\\Security Options.
In the details pane, scroll down to the policies whose names begin with User Account Control .
For each policy, double-click it and click the Explain tab for information before you decide upon a setting.

If you or anyone has the time, please check this and report back.

Found first at:

To view/set the UAC security settings with Security Policy Manager

There is other useful information there.

I've had the MDP-130 installed on Vista for a few days now, and while it works, I have noticed something strange.

During pans, the video gets "jerky". This is true for live OTA and file playback.

I'm going to install the card in another PCI slot and reinstall the drivers/app.

Before the surgery...did you set MyHD's process priority to "high", either in the app's config. or in Task Manager (or whatever WinV calls that now)?

I know it was set to "high" on my XP machine. Let me check on the Vista machine.

EDIT:
Yes, it was set to "high" on the Vista machine also.

Hi,

This is a work in progress for a detailed guide to installing the "MyHD" and "CW_EPG" software on Windows "Vista".

Please check it carefully against your experiences and report any errors, omissions or differences from your installation.

"CW_EPG" is optional but this guide assumes that you will be installing and using it and wish to have the best experience.

The "MyHD on Vista Goal 1: Power failure recovery." will be the resulting system.
The requirement of "UAC" turned on will NOT be addressed at this time.

A simplified guide for those "MyHD" users who do not wish to use "CW_EPG" will be prepared later.

This guide is for Windows "Vista" Ultimate, a version for Windows "Vista" Home Premium will also be prepared later.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following are my notes during the preparation for installing the "MyHD" and "CW_EPG" software.
They are not part of the guide and will be removed later.
  1. "UAC" is turned OFF!
  2. "Nani-Teton" is an Administrator Account on HTPC "Teton".
  3. Installed all device drivers, Sound CPL still is a problem but working.
  4. Working from "Bosie" (Win "XP SP2" Laptop) using remote Desktop.
----------------------------------------------
  1. Deleted "MyHD" Shortcuts from Desktop.
  2. Closed "MyIRC" and "CW_Mon" Tray programs.
  3. Fusion Remote System Tray Icon throws errors upon Startup, left running (Still works).
  4. UnInstalled "MyHD" Application.
  5. Removed "MyHD" and "MyHD CW_EPG" folders from "Program Files"
  6. Using Device manager uninstalled "MDP-100 Video Capture" device and deleted the driver
software for it using the check box.
  7. Using Device manager uninstalled "MyIRC USB Remote Receiver" device and deleted the
driver software for it using the check box.
  8. Rescanned for hardware changes and both devices showed up under "Other Devices"
  9. Deleted "CW_EPG" key from registry.
  10. Deleted "CW_EPG" and "MyHD" keys from "Virtual Store" in the Registry.
  11. Searched for "MyHD", "MyIRC", "CW_EPG" and "CW_Mon" in the Registry and deleted
most of the keys found. Some "MyIRC" keys could not be removed and others were left as
they were expected to not affect the installation process.
  12. Deleted "MyHD" and "CW_EPG" folders from "Virtual store".
  13. Cleared "Nani-Teton" "Temp" Files.
  14. Cleared Windows "Temp" and Recycle bin.

Note! The above was done in an attempt to reset my system to prior to installing the "MyHD" and "CW_EPG" software so that I would see what new users see during the installation process. It is NOT necessary to do this when reinstalling "MyHD".

If I missed anything, please tell me ASAP.

Now had DTV. Clicked on HD and VGA output changed to Full Screen.
Pressed HD button on "MyIrc" Remote and display returned to Windows "Vista" desktop.

Tried "Digital" auto scan again. This time it worked on Ant1.
Did "Digital" auto scan again. This time on Ant2. Much faster with "Air" selected. But the two channels on this antenna needed to be added manually while moving antenna.

Set up "Favorite Channels.

Very good setup experience setting up "MyHD" on Windows "Vista".

The only problems were due to "Operator Error"

I had been running MyHD on my Vista Business edition with pretty good success. Suddenly, the program started locking up. I could start the program, and it would display the channel it was last on, but the program was frozen. It didn't respond to the remote and even mouse clicking on it did nothing. I had to force Vista to close down a program that "wasn't responding." I tried uninstalling MyHD software and tried to reinstall the program again. The install program would not even run! So it was toast at this point, I could not use and it and I could not even get it to reinstall.

Since I have "full PC backup" which is imaging software in Vista Business, I decided to restore my backup that I knew was good. It was only a couple of days old. Good news is the image backup worked good and was fast. MyHD seemed to be working fine.

At this point I decided to install a couple of things that were done after the backup, namely Google Desktop and Google Earth. After installing these programs, MyHD was toast again, nothing worked. I even tried installing the latest drivers and the install program would not even run, same as before the image restore! This time I was smart and uninstalled both Google apps. Guess what, now MyHD worked again, good as new. Even the install app would open and run like it should.

Very strange problem. I'll try to isolate this to which Google App is causing the problem and report back. I would like to use both these programs, but not at the expense of MyHD running correctly.

They need to seriously update the install program used for the drivers. If I am reading things correctly, they are using an install program from 1998. This is ridiculous. I don't expect Vista official drivers, although that would be nice, but I do think the install program should be more up to date than circa Windows 98.

MyHD 120 with 166 drivers, Vista Business, Dual Opteron 2.5Ghz, 3GB memory.

Update: Further information. I was using the older 166.0.0 drivers. I could not get the 166.1 drivers and app to install properly until I chose to run the install program in XPSP2 compatibility mode and also choose to run as an administrator by right mouse clicking on the file and choosing this option. Now that I have the latest drivers, and they seem to be working fine, I might try installing the Google stuff one at a time and see what happens.

Hi,

The "MyHD" was developed in a very sterile environment. It was not tested with any other software. It is intended to be used in that sterile environment. Additionally the initial plan was way too much more than MIT could get done and they have now stopped development. This has left wide holes open for problems as MS has and is changing interfaces that the "MyHD" was getting set up to use but never did.

MS has addressed some problems with "dll's" versions but they have not yet done anything about a very simular problem with "Codecs".

One of the reasons that I am moving to Windows "Vista" is the hope that methods have been introduced to better manage the problems with "MyHD" so that it does not dominate how I use my HTPC.

These methods have not yet been researched and it may be some time until we know how to address problems like you are seeing.

What can we do in the meantime?
  1. Have the only software on your HTPC the "MyHD" software.
  2. Run as much software as possible on VPC.
The current version is free and the VPC "Vista" version coming in March will also be free and allow the use of 2-3 additional "Vista" installations with the host computer licenses. (If my memory is correct)
  3. As you have done, be prepared to back up to a previous saved state when necessary.
  4. Build and maintain a list of software that causes or has problems running on the same computer as the "MyHD".
  5. Upgrade to a different HDTV card.

After running "MyHD" on "Vista" for some time I and others will hopefully be able to research how other programs are causing problems with "MyHD" and how it is causing problems with other programs. We then may be able to reduce this unwanted interaction.

I have already started a list of persons willing to help but more help will be needed.

As I said before: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...&&#post9650472

I too couldn't get the integrated MyHD installer to work initially. Even with UAC turned off, and running it in XP-Mode, it would give me an error about the driver.

Last night, I tried the 1.66.0.1 installer in XP-Mode, and it worked. Strange indeed.

I'm still seeing the "stuttering" during pans. Will try another PCI slot this weekend.

Also, if you set the MyHD as Priority High, other programs (such as Winrar) come to a crawl. I haven't figured out why yet.

That's the whole point of setting priority to high, it dedicates most of your CPU time to the program that is set that way. In this case, MyHD is using most of your CPU, and WinRAR can't go as fast as it would otherwise.

It didn't do this in XP. I always had it set to High in XP, and WinRAR was faster on my P4 2.8Ghz than my E6600 (@ 3.0Ghz).

Plus, when setting it to High in Vista, my CPU usage is only 3%. If I turn it off, it's at 10%.

Another thing I noticed with version 1.66.1 of the MyHD app. If I play a file (obviously in file mode), the OSD is messed up. It keeps "Press xxx on the remote for playlist" on the screen at all times. I can't get rid of it.

I kept the 1.66.1 drivers installed, but reverted back to 1.66.0 of the app, and that problem went away. More testing tonight.

I still haven't reinstalled the Google Apps, but MyHD 120 did act up one more time, even with these apps uninstalled.

I loosened up my memory timings, which were too tight, trying to get every ounce out of my system, and it hasn't hung since that time. I might try installing Google Desktop search, which I really like. The Google Earth app is nice, but Windows Live has better sattlelite images where you can almost identify individual cars.

Anyway, my system seems to be running fine. I will probably keep Vista as my primary OS because I like many things about it, and it does seem to play OK with MyHD. One odd thing is that when I try to delete my recordings after watching them, it won't delete one of the files, I think the second one in a one hour recording (I have my file size set to just about DVD+R disk size, in case I want to archive the TS captures.) When I try to delete them from my computer, it gives me an error message about the file being in use. Not a big deal, as I just close the program and go delete them manually.

One final glitch, with my ATI XL800 card, which I don't use the passthrough to view HD, the overlay window when playing back files has a terrible glitch every three or four seconds. Once again, not a big deal as I watch the actual HD on my LCD-TV or projector and I don't see this glitch there.
After un-installing the device driver and app, I put the MyHD card in another PCI slot. It was in PCI #2, so I moved it to #1. Reinstalled the driver and app.

Stutter during pans still remains. When I say stutter, it's like it drops a frame or two. The audio remains perfect via MyHD spdif out.

I noticed that it mainly happens when a scene is panning up or down (or I guess elevate would be a better word).

EDIT:
Installed the X-Mystique, and setup the MyHD sound through it. Didn't fix the problem.
I'm going to try spdif output through the onboard sound, and see if that fixes it.
Google Desktop was the offending program. At least on my Vista computer, installing Google Desktop totally fries MyHD. The program locks every time Google Desktop is installed, and works normal after uninstalling. Kind of a strange conflict. You think installing video editing software and DVD creating software would create more conflicts with MyHD, but that isn't the case, as I have installed three or four of these each and MyHD continues working.

Hi,

Yes, one of the reasons I had to keep it was to keep a running count of WinV users. (Remember, a Vote can be cast for several versions).

The downsize is that only one poll can be active and I have more poll questions.

One burning question that I have is the number of "CW_EPG" WinV users.

I have reported success with "CW_EPG" and all that is delaying my changing my recommendation for "MyHD" on WinV is either my own success with "MyHD on Vista Goal 1: Power failure recovery." or reports of others success with that goal.

I also want to write a short description of how "MyHD" can be used on WinV.

Often what is lacking from software documentation is a description of how the authors intend it to be used. Sometimes even the authors do not understand how it can be used.

A few posts back you pointed to a message on the "MyHD MDP-130" thread. After I read it I read following messages for any follow ups and discovered what I thought was a "MyHD" problem was a "Windows" limitation.

When running a HTPC using MS Windows you are effectively limited to one user account due to the requirement that the account used for "MyHD" and "Fusion" must be the account logged on when starting a scheduled capture.

Thus I plan to withdraw "MyHD on Vista Goal 3: Fast User switching.".

If you are interested I have some suggestions for a "CW_EPG" poll which I would post there.

I also have some poll questions for all "MyHD" users. It might be necessary for you or someone to start a new thread, "MyHD Main Thread" if the "MyHD MDP-130" thread owner does not wish to oversee poll(s).

Hello to all here,

I'm a long time reader of the HTPC posts on AV forum. I've learned most of what I know about HTPC's from this forum simply from passive reading. So much so that I sucessfully assembled my first HTPC in Dec. of 2005 with a MyHD MDP-130 running on a 2.4GHz P4 800FSB HT with XP SP2 OS. I have been enjoying it since. I have decided to join since I am looking to assemble a new C2D E6600 HTPC with WinV home premium and hope to transfer my existing MyHD MDP-130 and DVI daughter board and install the drivers and applications software under a virgin OEM installation of WinV. The MYHD setup has worked on my present system to my satisfaction. I'm no power user just OTA ATSC tuner, .ts HD capture and MPEG2 .ts file playback features are used on my system. No DVD or other video file types are accessed. I have read most of the posts in this tread and am pretty clear on what to expect with I attempt the installation. However, I have a couple of questions.

1. Does anyone have any experience with installing the MyHD drivers and applications (including MyIrc) on a virgin install of WinV home premium?
2. Where can I find the latest drivers and applications for the MDP-130 and MYIrc that can be made to work with WinV?
3. Can someone step me through the process of installing the drivers in WinV using the XP SP2 compatibility mode and also how to setup WinV to run the MyHD applications with administrative privaleges?

Thanks
My real name is Dave if that matters here.
1. I installed mine on a virgin install of Vista Ultimate 32-bit, Home Premium should be the same.

2. Read the MyHD Meta-FAQ, it's a sticky at the top of the forum. Links for drivers are in there.

3. Install the card.
-Boot to Vista.
-Right-click on the installer package, go to properties. On the properties page, click on compatibility, and select Windows XP SP2. Click ok to get out of properties.
-Run the installer, it will install the driver and app.
-Make the MyHD app, MyIRC, and TitanTV helper app all run in XP SP2 compatibility mode. Also, have them all run in Administrator mode.
-Reboot. It should all work fine.
In addition to making the installer XPSP2 compatible, when you run the installer, right mouse click on the file and choose to run as an administrator. I also had to make the two main files, Myhd.exe and myirc.exe, XPSP2 compatible after the install.

I also turned off UAC, as neither of these programs would run without little nag boxes asking for permission. I think the implementation of UAC is seriously flawed in that many people are just going to give permission to everything without thinking, thus defeating the whole purpose. Also I think UAC is not needed for concientious users. To turn UAC off, go to User Accounts and click on the "Turn User Account Control on or off."

I turned off UAC also (actually, that was the first thing I did after installing Vista).

I had to make the titantvhelper app XPSP2 compatible, because if I didn't, the drop-down list of my channels would all say D00-0000.

Thanks guys,
Actually, I haven't even assembled the hardware for my new machine yet. I kind of wanted to be pretty sure the MyHD stuff would work on the new system before I pulled the cards from my present machine. With any luck my new HTPC will also be able to play blu-ray movies in HD as well. I hope I will have no conflicts between the PowerDVD and the MyHD applications running on Vista.

Any thoughts on that?

PowerDVD and MyHD play together just fine.

Also, I think I found my "stutter" during pans problem. My RAM timings were wrong. There were supposed to be 5-5-5-15, but my motherboard read SPD wrong, and set it to 4-4-4-12. I was having some BSOD issues with other programs, and stumbled upon the ram timings. After manually fixing the timings, the MyHD seems to be working properly now.

I had no idea Ram would cause a problem with the MyHD, since it's hardware-based. I'll do more testing tonight.

Damn, back to the drawing board. Yes, the memory timings were wrong, and fixed everything, except for the MyHD. I did a lot of testing last night, and here's what is occurring:

1. Running the MyHD app in either High Priority mode or not, it pretty much TOTALLY takes over the system. Everything else is extremely slow when recording a OTA program. For instance:

When not recording, I get 16MB/s transfer rate with HDTV2MPEG2, when editing a file. When recording, I get 2.2MB/s. The same slowdowns occur in MPEG2REPAIR. Actually, slowdowns occur in everything. Seems there is an I/O problem.

2. The recordings are screwed up. Those "dropped frames" I mentioned in earlier posts are actually showing up in the recordings. My signal strength is at 100% (Tivo records it perfectly), so that isn't the problem. When I try to edit a recording in H2M or VideoRedo, I can "see" the garbage that's getting introduced into the stream. I did record a 1 minute sample of Idol last night, I can upload it if anyone thinks it would help.

Due to #1 and #2, I'm seriously thinking it's an I/O problem of the card, or specifically the driver (because I still see the dropped frames even when I'm not recording).

I don't believe it's the motherboards PCI slot, because I changed slots, the same thing is happening. In the slot it used to be in, I installed a X-Mystique, and it's working just fine.

I don't want to abandon the MyHD, so any ideas would be appreciated.
