I am glad we have a few statisticians on this thread so, let me recap for the others:

1. Both formats have a positive trend which does not show that either format is flagging, and this is not looking like the UMD trend!

2. Avg rank trend slop is higher for BD, so it does show that there is more purchase taking place for that format.

3. However, the slope of new titles trend and released titles trend is higher or greater than the sales rank trend slope.

4. This shows that HD DVD will need fewer titles to match the sales rank of BD - given other things stay as they are.

My point is that the current trends on dvdwars by no means shows weakening of HD DVD, while showing adoption for BD. The recent slew of new titles IMHO has more to do with the sales ranking than the PS3. The PS3 impact is there, but it's the relative lack of HD DVD titles that is effecting the rankings.....should not be surprising.

dvdwars is a valuable source for analysis....

I think this is a fair analysis.

Of course if the trend continues...

We should get an idea very soon as to what Universal is planning.

However, I strongly believe that new releases (movies made within the last year) are the driving force, so if Universal can muster up a bunch of those...

I agree with you partially. I think that the PS3 is the reason why the user base is larger than it was two months ago.

Now the lack of HD DVD titles IS what is hurting that format at the moment. Did the HD DVD group not bother to think of that? At this current trend, HD DVD won't make it to the fall for their massive "300 title release".

Why don't the PS3 sales count? There are a quite a few people who have bought it solely for movies. Why don't they count? You can't possibly think that every PS3 owner bought it exclusively for all those games that HAVEN'T been released yet.

Throw out the Toshiba HD-A1 since that was the first HD player available and many people probably bought it out of confusion. BD is outselling HD-DVD by 10,000:1 ftw!!!!111

Krinkle, I have a BD player (no hd-dvd) but your thread title is misleading. Blu-ray appears to be pulling away somewhat in sales, but only in the past 3 days or so, which isn't a long enough time period to get particularly excited about. Moreover, you claimed blu-ray is pulling "far" away, when your data doesn't yet support that conclusion.

I don't know of anyone here who thought amazon.com was a valuable source last year and now discounting it. OTOH, I know lots of posters who discounted it last year, now thinks it's a valuable source.

I personally believe there are interesting observations one can gleam from this site and it does show general trends pretty well.

I'd say there are about the same number of people who are buying the BD version of Departed v. the HD DVD version. So, that to me is an interesting data point since it shows that HD DVD is very much in the game.

It's how you look at data that creates interesting information

What the f**k is going on with future hd-dvd movie releases? I am close to the point of giving up on the idea of buying the xbox360 hd dvd drive due to very little concrete info on what and when titles are coming out

All this wait and see what Universal do next, smacks of desperation!
Why don't they get behind hd-dvd, and start announcing grade A titles,the longer this silence goes on the more likely format neutrals will opt for the blu ray option.
Anounce Gladiator....now that would generate interest and give hd-dvd a deserved boost

Well I still think thedvdwars.com is biased towards HD-DVD. There are frequently big BD titles missing, sales ranks are of by thousands and what else and yet at the same time HD-DVD titles are fine or have minor flaws. What I find amusing is that even with those errors BD has still pulled ahead.

Hi Fett, I am not saying that DVDwars is fair all of a sudden. I am still saying that it is unfair. If it was fair Blu-ray would be much further ahead. DVDwars has a history of leaving off Blu-ray titles from its survey.

In fact, the owner of those "eproductwars" sites is on record in favor of HD-DVD.

The reason I made this thread is becuase I was an early BD supporter when you were still a HD-DVD only fan, and you were pretty vocal on these forums about it too. Don't get me wrong though, its great you joined us on the Blu-side . Back then it was very very unpopular to like BD on this site. I have stuck to my guns for months here, in spite of the hostility from HD-DVD fanboys. So I think its fair if a few of us take the time now to say "I told you so".

Updated numbers at DVD Empire:

HD DVD Blu-Ray
36.35% 63.65% Week
42.36% 57.64% Month
57.12% 42.88% Year (I think this includes 2006 data...otherwise the data would not makes sense ...IE the top two figures)

Its just a snapshot of one retailer ...take it for what its worth.

The HD DVD camp forgot that this is about movies. It is FACT now that Blu Ray is outselling HD DVD. The trend was visible with Best Buy, DVD Empire and now also on the much discussed DVD wars. Unless the HD DVD camp wakes up, they won't catch up.

Dual format owner here.

If I remember right many of the BD exclusive folks on here claimed that dvdwars was not accurate and didn't represent the market as a whole.

So now all of the sudden it does? Did I miss something?
