BLU-RAY SALES THREAD: Put all sales figures and comments here! - Page 101

Hit and miss here in Phoenix. Two of my local stores have the same shelf space for each but the store at Arrowhead now has double the shelf space for Blu-Ray. The guy did say they would be increasing the HD shelves this weekend though so I'm wondering if it will end up being the same after the increase. Nice to see increasing shelf space for one or both.

*jealous* My BB had several shelves dedicated to BR and a few to HD DVD (four Blu vs. two HD DVD), and generally carried almost every "mainstream" title released on both formats. Much to my dismay, I went this past weekend and they had redone their HD section: one shelf each for Blu and HD, and the Blu shelf was only half full, the HD maybe three-quarters. IT WAS DEVASTATING! I couldn't even buy anything.

Hopefully this just means HDM in general is selling exceptionally well and their stock was just momentarily decimated with the BD BOGO. If this is indicative of their new HD lineup, though, all I can think to myself is "uh oh"

Sorry.... but I don't get it. The posts here in general do address Blu-Ray sales (and marketing, titles, etc associated with sales). I thought the very reason for this sticky was NOT to clog the boards with every individual comment an individual may have on this or related topics.

If the hddvd fanboys were to spend their time over in the "red" corner, matters might be a little bit more on target here. As stated before, they are drawn to the better Blu side like moths to light. I do understand their need to have some association with a winning format, so I welcome my red-faced (though neutral-badged) breathren to the Blu-Ray sales forum.

AMEN! There are a couple of people posting in this forum under the guise of being "neutral"... I am all for a healty debate, but coming into the BLU-RAY forum to promote HD-DVD or format neutrality is trollish behavior!

I think it has more to do with my need to go slumming.

I was just messing with Nevr2big with all his must hate the other format antics. I do like HD-DVD better but only because of the movie selection. I'm a huge fan of The Thing and alot of the Universal catalog stuff and also enjoy some of the Warner catalog stuff such as Casablanca and Mutiny on the Bounty. The Warner stuff should be making its way to Blu-Ray soon and if you like the old stuff you are in for a treat. I love my PS3 as a Blu-Ray player and I think the format looks just as good as HD-DVD so thats even in my book. I'm not a huge sound person so that doesn't really come into play imo. I've heard some are better on Blu-Ray and some are better on HD-DVD where sound is concerned. The advantage with HD-DVD and the internet stuff is also not a big deal imo after seeing it in action(Blu should have this soon too I think). I'm a big fan of the older MGM stuff and I'm hoping we start seeing alot more of the catalog stuff on Blu-Ray in the next year. Its all good to me and I just love movies.

Funny one !!! The exclusive hddvd titles are paltry at best. Those old flicks look almost as good on a good upscaled standard DVD than on hddvd - for many it will not be worth the reinvestment if the s-dvd is already owned

Good thing, cause hddvd often comes up short. Same thing goes for the video.
I guess some hddvd titles are up to par with Blu-Ray though .

I'll answer Garman's question for you: No he's NOT format neutral. He's got the dreaded red-push.

I know, I was messing with you.... LOL Movies you mentioned are all good ones in my book... I have HD-DVD via the Xbox add on, I went through 2 XA2s so I will wait before I buy another HD-DVD player, although the newer dual formats units aren't bad, the Samsung 5000 might be my next purchase.

Nevr2Big: I have noticed lately a lot of negative threads by so many neutral people in the Blu-Ray Forums, Just trying to keep them in check... LOL.....

I'm on the other side with my opinion. I think older people will probably like HD-DVD movie selection better(like me) and younger people will like the Blu selection better. I realize some will buck that trend but for the most part I think it is true.

I have both and both formats have plenty of titles that come up short. Both have plenty of titles that are amazing. Why would you dread a red-push? I don't dread you having a Blu push and I can certainly understand why a person could have either a Blu or Red push with the different market each format seems to be going for. My first "push" is movies and that is why I love and support both formats.

You're probably right. As folks get older their visual and auditory acuity diminishes making the deficiencies of hddvd less evident .

Sorry, that comment came from earlier home theater days with Mitsubishi rear projection systems and time spent at the Home Theater Spot site. The Mits was well known for its "push" of red coloration and some smarter guys than I (Paul Carleton et al) figured out how to hack into the Mits and fix this.

You seem like a decent enough guy; I just disagree with the concept that 2 formats is good for the medium. The little gains realized by the few who purchase both formats is far offset by the hinderance 2 formats has on allowing generalized acceptance of the high def format and the subsequent release of far more titles.

They wont have another chance to wear the yellow jersey like they had this go around, for a long time to come.

Ha!

Earlier this week I was looking over at the Deepdiscount online store and their top 20 hidef sales list. Transformers was in the number 3 spot and it was the only HD-dvd on the list. Looking at it today and its number 2 with 3 other Hd-dvds further down the list. Both times I looked POTC was beating it in in sales.

2 fer deal sparked massive sales. Just about all those Blu movies in the top 20 are part of the deal. Competition is always good for the consumer. Well at least if you're neutral.

Both are kicking butt. Amazing numbers HD-DVD is turning in considering it has far fewer players in consumers hands. I'm thrilled with the performance of both. Increasing sales on both sides means good things for both camps.

LMAO are people honestly still defending HD FUD? Its really a joke at this point... I mean one of THE biggest movies couldnt take a week for HD DVD. Oh yea the BOGO. LMAO. This is hilarious. I bet AVS wishes they hadnt picked the losing side because now all they do is delete blu posts and there is STILL no good news for HD FUD around here. Way to pick the winner. BWAA HAHAHAHAHA.. Cant wait till this inferior format kicks the **** once and for all so we can get all movies on the format that can actually handle high def AND great audio.

So let me get this straight. Blu-Ray gives away Disney movies at half price at over 7 or 8 of the biggest retailers and you think HD-DVD couldn't take the week? Even with a huge sale at just about all the big retailers Blu-Ray just pulled out a win. What would the numbers have been without the BOGO deal? 70/30? 75/25? 65/35? I'll give the Blu camp full credit for being smart with ways to curb retailer perceptions and full credit for allowing me to grow my Blu library on the cheap but to get all excited about a 51/49 win with what was done to get that win just makes me lol. The winners this week, just like every other week, are the dual format supporters who got to cash in on the best action movie this year and also got to cash in on some great Disney movies on the cheap. These two things are what drives me to get all excited.

PS: Get ready to wait.

What Blu-Ray did this week is how adoption of a new technology like this will occur. Who cares if a player costs $99, $199 or $599 if the discs are $25 a pop. Give me the software for $12.50 and those 100 movies in my collection are now $1,250 cheaper (not including 8.25% tax in NY State).

Oh I agree on your point but I would like to add that both are important. If one or the other format could get both together they would have a format winning combination but this never happened. Going forward I hope HD-DVD learns a lesson from Blu-Ray and starts having promotions with Universal(I think they are learning because they had a deal with Paramount software at Frys a couple of weeks ago) and I hope Blu-Ray learns from HD-DVD with hardware pricing(Sony is dropping the price of the PS3 but they also need a price drop on stand alones).

Funny you should mention this. I was just checking the release lists and from my non-expert view, it looks like November 27th could be the last chance for HD-DVD to pull out a win this year. What say you?

I would say no. Too many huge Blu releases on Nov 20 and that Star Trek set is very exspensive(those releases will carry over to the following weeks). The one that will sell the least it probably the best movie out of the bunch and its called Rescue Dawn. Amazing story of a Vietnam pow. HD-DVD might be selling more stand alones but they are not selling enough of them to keep up with PS3 sales. If the rumors are true about the 360 units having the HD drive built in are true this will help HD-DVD but this is still a ways off.

If true that does stink but we will have to wait and see. I would think the disc would still play and just have the internet stuff disabled. Will the original PS3 be able to be updated?
