Yeah I wasn't so sure it would help very much being the bargain hunters were out in force. I'm sure it will help a small bit but how many of these exspensive HD movies will bargain hunters buy? I'm liking the release list for both formats because I'm not into the big blockbusters (some I like such as the first POTC, the first two Spidey movies or Tranformers) but Blu sure has the lions share of BB's coming up and should beat HD-DVD handily like you said. I'm a little irked right now because some of the movies I was really looking forward to on Blu, such as Ronin and A Bridge Too Far, have been postponed. Lets hope Blu gets some of these older movies back on track and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that 20 Million Miles to Earth makes it out on Dec 4th.

If you're referring to the buy one get one free sale, you're right. And from my observations it's had a huge impact on Amazon.com sales.

Usually week to week I check the DVD "best sellers" and there are usually roughly 6-7 BDs and 2 HD DVDs in the top 100. Last week after the sale started I counted 20 BDs in the top 100 vs 3 HD DVDs.

This also made me wonder how Amazon tabulates figures for the best sellers category. Is it over a 7 day period? 30 day period? 48 hour period?

I'm sayin you can't use amazon as an indicator for which is selling better, that's just one online store.

I think what really matters in the format war is advertisement. What they need to do is show people what blu-ray even is, hell most people have never heard of it. Most people just don't care until they come check it out my TV, now a lot of my friends want blu-ray. So the more movies the better, it makes the sections larger, and it gets more time on TV, I mean ratatouille commercials were played non-stop.

Big software sale at Fry's Electronics on Fox(about time we got some Fox titles on the cheap)and Sony titles should help the Blu software numbers and drive another lesson home to the HD-DVD camp about having some software sales to spark interest.

I am currently using a XBR2 for my upstairs system and a Sony Pearl in the basement. I almost went for a Panasonic 1080p for the new bedroom but at 10-12 feet back the Pioneer 720/1080i set looked better, the good thing is it will accept 1080/24 signal... Now I just wish we would get a good less expensive combo player, because I will be limited on shelf space in bedroom.

Agree with that. Where is Lawrence of Arabia? I've seen the teasers in 20 or more BluRay disks!

Oh jeez I forgot about the Holy Grail of pushed back titles. I sure hope they are using the extra time to blow us away with the final product.

I think "the shawshank redemption" HD DVD is actually the "holy grail" of pushed back titles.

Phansson, I've seen Shawshank Redemption: I've always loved Shawshank Redemption: Shawshank Redemption was an amazing movie. Phansson, Shawshank Redemption is no Lawrence of Arabia

That was not the intention of my post. My post was point out "the shawshank redemption" has been postponed longer than "lawrence of arabia".

I know I will catch some flak, but I have seen both. "the shawshank redemption" is one of my favorite movies. I wasn't that impressed with "lawrence of arabia".

To each his own.....

I was just messing with you. That was the famous Loyd Bentson/Dan Quayle(spelling?) face off during their debate where Bentson told Quayle he was no Jack Kennedy. I love both movies but if I had to choose just one it would be Lawrence.

Why is HD-DVD pulling ahead on several of the Amazon dashboard charts? They must be having an HD-DVD sale that I missed because it just shot up today.

I know there was a 55% off select titles deal, but then the BOGO/Deals thread was closed and reopened somewhere else and I lost track of what deals were going on. No telling what the latest surge was actually from.

AMAZON has a bad-ass B1G1F sale right now on Blu and HD-DVD... many on the list that WERE NOT ON the other lists, including the "Best of" collections (4 movies each... get all 3 for $120)!

I grabbed Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead and Halloween for $39!

Tim,

Do you have a link to this, as I don't see it?

All of the top-selling Amazon titles are ones offered for free at checkout w/purchase of an HD-A3/30/35. I'd guess the Amazon charts are reflecting those free titles (since you do put them in your cart, they aren't mail-in like the five free which presumably wouldn't show up in sales figures).

It's Thanksgiving week! People are on vacation for the week with the family; and they're not around the computer. They'll be busy buying in-store deals.... Check out the top 10 Blu-Ray and HD-DVD selections; and it's obvious that people are not buying this week from Amazon. I expect it to pick up after this weekend.

Early reports, chalk up another one for BD. Early sales figure show BD with a 66:34 win. That makes the score for BD 45-0 for the 45 weeks of this year.

Another strong week for Blu.

I think the great Ace Ventura said : "Unfortunately in every contest there must be a loser". The hddvd fanboys would be correct if they claim they are Number #1 at losing.

Still waiting for 12/4 week .

The only losers are the ones watching half their movies in HD.

I must be one of the biggest losers then since most of my collection still consists of SD-DVD's (well over 2/3rds actually). Not sure what is wrong with that, but whatever.

GO BLU!!

I don't mind being a loser either

Anyhow, where can I find a source for the nielsen ratings? I can't seem to find them anywhere.

As tempting as it is to pick up a cheap A3 player...I just can't put money in Toshiba's hands. This who will win stuff has to end. So I only buy my movies on blu. I rent on sd-dvd whatever would have been an hd-dvd title. This way I only spend my money where it counts.

Absolutely nothing wrong with that. I own about a zillion too. I was talking HD movies.

Looks like this will not be ending anytime soon with hardware selling in great numbers for both formats.

Well with numbers consistently like this I am concerned and have held off buying any new HD-DVD discs till I possibly buy my A35 player.

10/14 71% 29%
10/07 68% 32%
09/30 54% 46%

08/26 68% 32%
08/19 71% 29%
08/12 66% 34%
08/05 62% 38%
07/29 66% 34%
07/22 74% 26%
07/15 61% 39%
07/08 66% 34%
07/01 65% 35%
06/24 70% 30%

BINGO! I was at CC yesterday looking at the A3. Would've paid $129.00 out of my pocket since I had a gift card, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. Just don't see any reason why I need it unlike a bad a$$ Blu-ray player; so, I picked up a couple BD titles and a game. Everything else not available on BD (and that I don't already own on SD-DVD) gets rented via Netflix.
