Let me know what you think, please critique my HT setup

I wasn't sure where to post this as I am asking about all of my equipment choices. I decided to place it here as my audio selections are the biggest question mark to me right now. If this should be elsewhere please let me know

As I get further along in my basement project, the time is getting near to pull the trigger on my HT equipment. I wanted to stay below $4,500 but am more then happy to come in under budget with this current config at $3,900 before cables.

Some specs on my basement:
Viewing distance: 10'
Cubic Feet: about 1,300' in the TV area but open on one side. (3,200 total)

After reading a lot of reviews and threads on this site here is what I came up with:

Velodyne CHT Front Row Speakers
2 additional CHT's for 7.1
SVS PB10
Pioneer VSX1016
Pioneer 5070
Sony DVP-NS75H

The speakers seemed like a great value but if there is another option that keeps me under my budget and provides a nice jump in performance I am all ears. Same goes for any of my other equipment.

Should I spend more on my speakers?
Different receiver?
Sub?

Rip this apart and let me know what you all think!

Thanks,

Bryan

as an alternative to the velodyne cht - i would look at the mission speaker lineup over at tsto.com. mission are overlooked alot (maybe because they're not widely available). they have a 5 speaker package that IMHO is better than the velodyne CHT for around the same cost. you can add 2 additional timbre matched for $70 i believe. but, i'm an self admitted mission fanboy. i love the missions i have though.

sounds like we have the same needs. do you have the pioneer VSX-1016TX yet? i am considering upgrading to this receiver. it's between 1016tx and the marantz sr4001 and the onkyo 604. if you do have it ..any impressions? or have you heard it in person yet?

I'll check the missions out, thanks!

I have not heard the VSX1016 yet, that decision was based mostly on reviews and specs. With the way I am encasing my plasma I really need HDMI switching with the ability to send all video signals through one HDMI cable otherwise I would have to do a good bit of work just to add equipment. I originally was stuck on the onkyo 674 but the pioneer seems to do much of the same for a good bit less. Aside from having to run an audio cable for all components (their HDMI is only a pass through) they both off the convience of HDMI switching I need.

Hopefully the pioneer has a good sound. I'm not sure I'll get to hear either of them before I purchase.

i plan on upgrading receivers in about 4 weeks. i'm really mostly torn between the 1016 and the marantz sr4100 or the sr5100 (if i could find the 5100 at near the same cost as the 1016 or sr4100- but unlikely). the onkyo 604 is in a distant 3rd place.

i REALLY would like the marantz sr4100- it has hdmi passthrough as well as the other 2. BUT the 1016 (and 604) seem to have some nicer features including the auto setup features. BUT, i would've thought the sr4100 would have a nicer sound. i can audition the 1016 and the onkyo easy enough even though i hate going to BB or CC however can't find a sr4100 nearby to audition.

if you get the 1016 fairly soon please post back and let me know what you think. and also if you get the missions let me know how you like them. keep the thread updated.

PS - for what it's worth as far as subs- it was my hardest decision. i have an onix x-sub (arrives today actually) that i am totally stoked about- have a friend who has one. this is a smaller sub but my viewing area may be smaller than yours- probably is. i hear the svs is really nice. you may also check out the hsu lineup too or any of the subs over at av123.

I apprecaite adamanteus's comments but does anyone else have some suggestions? Aside from inexpensive CRTs and HTiB's I've never bought this kind of equipment before, any insight would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Bryan

I would spend more money on speakers, something along the line of x-series from **********. Audio is an important piece of HT experience

Have you heard the CHT's? How do they compare to the x-series?

Thanks for the link, I'll start looking into them

Well, I've looked at some alternatives and decided to go with svs's 5.1 system & PB12. I will probably run the wires for 7.1 but for now I think this system will work well.

After reading the replies to this thread, continuing to read all the old threads in this forum, and a great price on the receiver from Circuit City I came up with some changes:

SVS 5.1 with the SB12-Plus
Onkyo 674
Sony 55A2000

Thank you all for your help!!!

You will enjoy the SVS system. It is a awesome system and comes with a killer sub. You'll have to look at yourself in the mioor and try to figure out how to get that stupid smile off your face. LOL

Did you get the Onkyo receiver yet? That Marantz 4001 is real nice.

[EDIT] originally misstated information about your selected tv.

overall I think you put together a good system.

If you really want a larger size screen, don't have the money for a huge plasma, and have the space in your home, I'd check out Rear Projection models.

I could be wrong but the sony 55A2000 is a rear projection 1080p TV, not an LCD.

You are correct. My mistake. I thought the A2000 was an LCD only designation. Above post corrected.

I did buy the receiver. The price I paid from CC is the same as what the Marantz was listed for on your link. I've heard mixed reviews for the 674 so I will keep the Marantz in mind if things don't pan out.

I've heard a lot about the PB10 on this site, but I wanted a 12 and the size of the SB12-Plus makes the built-in a little easier. Anyone have or have heard this sub?

I have heard the PB10 and it rocks for a small sub (if you call it small).

I haven't auditioned the 12, but from my experience with SVS it can't be bad.
