cable box in a cabinet - options to control it?

I have my 8300HD DVR in a built in cabinet and want to keep the cabinet doors closed when watching TV. I notice that there is a IR plug on the back of the cable box, but not really sure what all I need to make this work.

What are the various options I have so I can control the cable box with the cabinets closed?

Get an IR/RF remote like the "One For All" URC-9910, cost about $40.
