PC video/audio to 720p projector..HELP!!

OK I know I'm going to get totally flamed for asking this, but I'm a complete NOOB and I hope there's a kind soul out there that will point me in the right direction.

#1 - Video: Here's the deal, I've got a bunch of hi-def movies (720p, 1080i, 1080p) on my PC (mostly in ts and mkv formats) and I'd like to watch them on my new Panasonic PT-AX100U. The projector has HDMI and VGA inputs. My video card has VGA and DVI outputs. Can I just run a VGA to VGA cable, set the res at 1280x720, and view the movies in full hi-def? Could I run a DVI to HDMI cable and view them in hi-def? What problems might I run into?

#2 - Audio: I've got a Optical cable running from my PC's motherboard sound (supposedly 8 channels) to my A/V receiver. Will this produce Dolby or DCS sound?

I don't plan on putting a HD-DVD or Blue Ray drive on the PC, so am I right to assume HDCP won't come into play? Thanks for any info you can give me!! I love this forum.

Thanks,
Arrie

Yes. The PT-AX100U "PC IN" port supports 1280x720 resolution with a 60 Hz refresh rate. If your video card can output that then you're in business.

I believe so.

The Windows desktop may not be centered on the projector's display. The edges of the Windows desktop might be hidden beyond the edges of your projector's display because the projector is applying some overscan. You may notice that the projector may produce an artificial interference pattern that appears within a real regular pattern on your PC's image. All of these issues can be fixed through the projector's setup menu. Specifically, under the "Position" menu, adjust the H-Position, V-Position, Over Scan, and Dot Clock settings, respectively.

Did you ever get the DVI to HDMI working? I'm considering doing this but was just told (by the sales rep) that it might not work.

My video card is a nvidia 6800 AGP. Not HDCP compliant.

I am currently using DVI to HDMI cable right now with my Panny AE900U (basically the same thing as the AX100)

I also have my xbox 360 connected to the projector via VGA.

and PS2 and Nintendo Wii via component.

So yes you can use either VGA or DVI to HDMI or both if you wanted for video. and all you then need to do is set your PC to 1280 x 720 and your good to go.

for audio, the ONLY problem might be is that the TS or MKV viles might not be in DD or DTS. if they are mutli channel but not in DD or DTS you will only get two channel out via spdif cable.

You can try the AC3 filter to decode or re-encode the aduio, I don't mess around too much with TS or MKV files and I won't be much help here.

It'll work, there is absolutly no difference between DVI and HDMI other than the fact that HDMI also carries digital PCM audio over the cable.

but in terms of projectors you don't feed it audio anyways so you can easily get a DVI to HDMI cable and make it work.

FYI don't ever listen to sales reps in big box stores, they don't know jack!!!

If your looking for cheap but yet high quality cables head over to www.monoprice.com

and finally you don't need a HDCP supported video card unless you plan on doing HD DVD or Blu-ray DVD playback.

So if you just watching a DVD or standard video then you don't have to worry about HDCP, I'm running a 6600GT non-HDCP video card and it works perfectly fine for me.
