Please Help Pick My TV! Must Buy In Next 48 Hours!

All,

I will be getting a store credit from Circuit City and Samsung for my dead TX-3079WH, so I need to purchase a new TV from Circuit City. I'm looking at 32" LCD's. I'd like to end up with a total cost of $1000 or less, but I'm looking for the best value, not merely the cheapest price.

The TV is used for some HD viewing, a lot of Comcast SD (History Channel, Discovery, Cartoon Network, etc.), and the occasional DVD movie. I'm planning to hook up a home-built Linux NTSC DVR at some point, (HD DVR is also a more distant possibility), so computer display compatibility would be good but not mandatory (I can always just go DVI --> HDMI or S-Video). 2 HDMI's would be nice but not mandatory. My $350 antique-cabinet-made-into-entertainment-center very barely accomodated the old set, so physical width less than 35" is important -- this unfortunately eliminates the Olevia 232v that Circuit City sells.

If it were your money, which would you buy? I've tried to disguise the pricing while leaving it possible to compare my cost.

BRAND MODEL COST PREMIUM
Polaroid FLM-3232 -$100 (I'd still have store credit left)
Panasonic TC32LX60 $0
Sharp LC-32SH20U +$80
LG 32LC2DU $0
Samsung LN-S3241D +$120
Sony KLV-32U100M +$100

Or ... Something else Circuit City sells.

I'd appreciate any and all help; my wife is recovering from surgery and is getting very tired of the 20" SD I brought up from the basement on Sunday.

Thanks,
doc

Olevia 232v gets my vote. Then with the extra money you could buy an upconverting DVD player, an overpriced HDMI cable, and a few DVD's. Or keep the extra in a store credit for later on.

Yes, I wish I could do the Olevia, esp. if I can get the store to give me last week's sale price ($600). But it just won't fit where I need it to go.

Yeah what happened to the price of the Olevia? I was going to buy it but the price went up a few hundred bucks! My friend bought it a month ago at 600!

I paid just a lil over 5 bills for the 232v by searching the internet and a little creative shopping. It was a Christmas gift to my sister and her family and they love it. The SD looks better on it than on my 537h but that be contributed to the larger screen size too.

I would say from the list you have I would go with the Panasonic TC-32LX60. I have one in my bedroom hooked up directly to Comcast and I love it! I don't use a cable box because the QAM tuner receives all the digital and HD channels I want. The SD on this set is a little better than my Sony KDL-46XBR3 I have in the family room but that may be due to the smaller screen size. I don't think you will be disappointed except for the fact there is no PC (VGA) input.

my two cents...

All,

Thanks for the helpful replies. I was able to convince Circuit City to give me a refund instead of a store credit, so obviously my range of choices got a lot bigger.

phipp, what do you think of your Olevia 537? The 532 is very attractively priced at Tiger Direct, which is 15 minutes from my house. That's high on my list at the moment.

All, would you get the Olevia 532 for $600ish, a Panasonic TC32LX60 for $850ish (open box but looks fine)? Any opinions on Viewsonic or some off-brand called Konka? So many choices, so little time!

I've got the 537h and I love it. I have had no problems with it and thats what convinced me to buy the 232v. Which is basically the same as the 532h except for the speaker placement. The 537h I've had since October and I have to say the picture was pretty much spot on out of the box.

I agree with Ohio. Panasonic makes some of the best (if not the best) LCD HD TV's. I'm looking @ a 26" Panny for my wife & I can't find a better set picture wise. It's an excellent choice. Remember...You get what you pay for!

I'm not a big fan of 3rd tier LCD manufacturers. Viewsonic made it's name with computer monitors & has tried to get their feet wet with HDTV's. Not a fan of Viewsonic or Olevia. Had to return a Olevia set a few years back, I do think they are making some strides, but still not up to 1st tier LCD TV's IMHO. Konka...Just pass on that Mainland China junk. It's simply not worth trying to save a few bucks in the long run. Just my 2 cents worth!

All,

I do see that the Panny's have considerably better contrast ratios than the lower tier manufacturers. The wife and I did like the Panny's PQ a lot when we were @ CC last night. Their open-box 32" Panny for 850ish is high on the list of choices.

Please bear with my n00biness ... is there a simple way to see the difference in the pictures when the sets aren't side-by-side? How does one tell the diff. between a lower qualilty set and a poorly tweaked one? Wife and I agree we want best value, which may or may not be lowest price. We also know that messing with the settings on the lower priced screens is one way some salesmen like to bump people up to the higher-priced models.

As far as my Konka question goes ... "Mainland China" is all you needed to say. Quality and QC just aren't there yet.

It's too bad you didn't have a few more days to play with. I would ask for another $50.00 the open-box if I were in your shoes.

Trust me, it's worth the few extra dollars in the long haul. Could something happen to the Panasonic? Sure could, but as we know their failures rates are much, much lower & your getting a better picture & usually a better remote control. Have you ever noticed that 3rd tier HDTV companies cut HUGE corners on the remotes? Just another cost saving measure.

Pull the trigger on the Panny & you won't look back. It's a win-win vs. the lower end LCD TV's out there. Good luck Doc with your decision!

The Olevia is not 3rd tier it is 2nd tier. And Panasonics main TV is their Plasmas. So one could consider the Panny LCD as 2nd tier. Doc go to the store, dont worry about freakin remotes either , and BUY THE LCD THAT LOOKS BEST TO YOUR EYES!!!!!!!! Only you can decide what is best for you. Other people can only give you their opinion.

Olevia gets much of it's mother glass from LG Philips I believe and then the rest is done by Syntax Olevia and probably the best budget value. I'm familiar with Olevia since I must purchase budget panels that are the best value for my network classrooms and starting to place them in our conference and media rooms as I'm spending our tax dollars to procure them I must aim for the best value.

Presently I have two Olevia's and looking to add 5 more 537's in the months ahead. I do have one Viewsonic TV in a Child Care room and it took two RMA returns to get one that worked right and two strikes and your out when I buy for my Organization.

In my home I go higher scale but really if you don't have another to compare with in your home and you understand the blacks won't be at peaks levels the colors and clarity can be excellent on an Olevia also if one feeds it quality source content.

As to the Panny LCD I would bet it truly is a rebadged JVC since Matsuchita (Panny) owns a majority stake in JVC and LCD is an after thought for Panny their line is so limited but I just read in an Asian Press Release yesterday they have JVC is on the auction block with at least four different buyers involved. Anyways, your eyes and budget should determine the winner. Good Luck!

Yes Westa Olevia does get a majority of its panels from LG. Then you have the LG an Olevia bashers saying Olevia is getting panels that do not pass LG QC standards...... Then they go on to say if that arguement doesn't work that LG panels just plain ole suck. I recommend Olevia because I have 2 of them and they are the best bang for the buck IMHO. Thats why I have also started to reply "Let your eyes be the judge, buy what looks good to you"

I just left Circuit City, Best Buy, Sears, Wal Mart and Costco, searching for a 32" LCD.

WalMart had the Sylvania 6632 on sale for $668.00 and I wanted to shop around. Sears also sells that unit, and they price match. In shopping, I ignored price, and just picked the units that I liked.

To my surprise and delight, the Sylvania really DID have the best of everything I wanted. The picture was noticably better than most the units around it, and only one unit in the $1500 class really compared closely. (a Samsung, by the way)

"Tipstr" told me about these units in another thread, and I'll be darned if he wasn't telling the truth!

Very surprising to me, because cost wasn't what I was looking at. But in the end, it's worked out that way!

I hope this helps. Circuit City had the 37" on sale for $859, I believe, I think the 32" was the same price.

I've definitely made my choice for the 32". I just printed the WalMart ad and will be heading to Sears for a price match +10% of the difference. Best wishes on the purchase.

All,

Well, tonight the decision gets made. The finalists are:

Vizio P42 42" Plasma, Refurb, $875ish total cost, would need extended warranty
Vizio VX37L,
Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37" LCD 1080P Monitor, $1100ish total cost
Olevia 537H 37" LCD, $740ish
Olevia 232V 32" LCD Refurb, $530ish
Panasonic TC32LX60 32" LCD, $900ish
Samsung LNS3251D 32" LCD Open Box, $950ish

Here's where we are:

1) We didn't care for the Sylvanias we saw last night -- always looked 2nd best to us when next to another TV.

2) Sonys and Samsungs look great with prices to match.

3) We saw one Olevia LCD and thought it looked a bit washed out, but it may have been set up badly (the sales guy couldn't get the brightness etc. changed).

4) We rather liked Vizio LCD's.

5) Haven't seen the Westinghouse, but the reviews I've seen are positive, and it's 1080P.

Thanks again for the interest and guidance,

To change the settings on the Olevia you have to take it out of showroom mode in the menu and put it into home mode. Maybe you could teach the salespeople that lol

I cant decide between the 1080p 37" Westy or the 37" LG. Tuner or no Tuner?????????????
Since half of my use will be PC I would like the 1080P. The lack of tuner deters me.

Well, I ended up with the 42" Vizio plasma refurb. Once my wife saw a soccer match on the LCD's in the store this AM, the blurred motion drove her up the wall. So for us, the plasma makes the best sense. Early results are that it's great, and that I get to build a new top for the entertainment center. Life has its way sometimes ...

Thanks for all the help and thoughts, it helped us make an informed decision. I'll be floating around with a few questions I'm sure ... there's certainly a learning curve on this stuff!
