analog cable 480i to HDMI upconverting

Hello newb here,

I am in the process of buying a new Sharp Aquos 42,46 (62u version) or a 46 (92u newer version) LCD. I am planning on buying a Sony PS3 for the BluRay.
I only have basic analog cable comming thru my 27 old panny tv. I can upgrade to HD box thru my Cable Co but I donnot want to give them more money.

So my question is what do I need to upconverting the basic cable from 480i to a higher sorce to be displayed on my new LCD? Will a Denon, Pioneer Elite, or Onkyo Receiver do this upconverting to a 720p,1080i, or even a 1080p signal???

You need a scaler to do that.

Double check with your Cable Co., most of them don't charge extra for service, they might charge you for DVR, but it is not necessary for viewing HD of course.
It sort of defies the purpose to spend several thousand dollars on display, and cripple it by using substandard source. Besides decent VP is at least $1000.00 (used) - about 8 years of renting DVR from CC! And it will NEVER give you anything even remotely approaching HD! I know, I tried it with Cablevision and LumagenHDP VP (just out of curiosity - I DO have HD feed from them), and outcome it pretty disgusting...

The new Sony STR-5200ES receiver will do that for you and does an excellent job in upscaling and de-interlacing by using the latest Faroudja chipset.
