That's it, I'm done, I'm out

Thread Starter
I have had a loudspeaker obsession for a while now. The perfect loudspeaker is the Holy Grail for many of us, I'm sure I'm not the only one. Fortunately, I haven't been buying speaker after speaker until I found the right one. I have cautiously auditioned and searched every nook and cranny on the web for every piece of print put out by all the others who, like me, have been on a Grail quest. For three years. Hours and hours and hours of my life spent in pursuit of my obsession.

I was finally down to 3 choices. Brand X, Brand Y, or the elusive, once in a lifetime deal I have heard whispered about in various forums like this. I scanned audiogon and ebay multiple times daily, like an Airman reviewing satellite photograph after satellite photograph after satellite photograph, looking for hidden Soviet missile installations.

I finally found the incredible, once in a lifetime deal, or at least a very, very good deal. I will soon be the owner of a pair of Tannoy Eyris 3 fronts, Eyris 1 rears, and Eyris C center in American Walnut. There are nicer speakers and loftier goals than mine, but I satisfied my desire to rise above my humble beginnings to something that is A) a nice piece of furniture, and B) comes from an established company with a respectable hifi heritage. I realize my purchase will seem modest to many, but it's a big deal for me.

So that's it. I may glance at the occaisional av forum, but I am done. I want my time back. I want the marital tension caused by my obsession to cease. I want to listen to music, not chase an idea. I will get a new pre/pro, when they make one that has the features I want. I will probably even replace these speakers, when the kids are grown and out of the house. For now, I am going to concentrate on fixing my obsession on things that are real and quit chasing rainbows, and sit back and enjoy the music.

I'll post an in depth evaluation of the Tannoys once I have spent some quality time with them in my space with my gear. They are a rather underreviewed make here in the states so hopefully it will be of interest to someone.

Congratulations. My speaker obsession also ended when I found a pair that I cannot possibly improve on.

Isn't this the truth for people who enjoy this hobby and try to find audio nirvana.

Mlankton: Much luck with your new Tannoy's. Looking forward to your review.

Should we start an office pool on how long it takes him to come back?

Now he just needs to find a big enough room to put them in. That one is way too small! (Better learn sign language if you wil be spending much time in there.)

Thats been the problem, you are so right! I get bouts of obsessivness about every 6 months or so. I start thinking, gee what can I upgrade on now, and sell off! It has taken up way to much of my time, and has sometimes caused my wife to "wig out" Anyway, the OP is right and I should follow his lead. After one more upgrade maybe I will

The marital tension will continue. It always does. While you are immersed in your music and she wants to chat...

I heard the IRS system at a Stereophile show in Los Angeles near LAX about 15 years ago or so. I remember being underwhelmed. I was not impressed at all, especially considering the price tag and all the buzz about the speakers. I remember Jadis and Carver electronics driving them and everyone in the room looked almost silly but I just didn't hear what all the fuss was about. Oh, well...

Looks like the beginning of a monster movie.
Are they wall mountable

In my opinion that Infinity set up looks ridiculous and distracting, even if it was in a room big enough for the speakers.

I wonder what it sounds like.

Many many years ago I heard the IRS setup at a Stereophile show in San Mateo CA. The sound was impressive, and tonally there was nothing you could be disappointed with. Unfortunately, they just sounded too large. Not the speakers... the sound. I remember hearing a Ray Brown bass piece. Sounded perfect. Except it sounded so large you felt like you were inside Ray Brown's bass. Or it was right next to you. And about 12 feet tall.

Larger speakers aren't the problem though, since I also remember hearing a Martin Logan Statement setup at the same show. Larger speakers. But audio Nirvana. More air between instruments. But things sounded "real". I remember hearing West SIde Story and Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror" and the imaging and sound field was so real it was scary. Sorta like Quads US63 but covering the entire sound spectrum, including low end extension.

That's interesting re: the IRS. I remember the room I heard them in was quite large, although I don't recall feeling their sound is "huge" as you did -- although it's been a while!

At the same show I liked the B&W 801s; I remember hearing Bonnie Raitt and the vocals (..."had a fight with my daughter, she went out in a rage, third time this week, don't tell me it's the age...") were very involving, you could hear her inflections and breathing. I don't remember MLs at that particular show but as far as box-frees I do remember being impressed with Sound Labs (despite the music choice -- something by dead people -- classical etc.). I liked the timbre to the instruments, especially strings. Keep in mind this was 1990s models (I hate it when time just rolls on by!).

That's because physics of the line-source's soundfield are fundamentally different than all other speakers -- and different than nature, hence what you heard. Big electrostatics also sound like overlarge headphones.
