It seems clear to me that you need to be looking at much lower shades of gray than you are using if you want to test for banding. All the banding photos others have posted appear to use gray screen levels at say 20-30 -40 % above black. Your photos look like you are running at full 100% brightness. And of course a smooth flat gray scale will show the banding far easier than a phot of a standard or HD image.

I am just suggesting you feed the set a lower level gray signal ( use the internal test signal or use Video essentials -a 20-30% gray level test frame )and then look for and take photos showing absence of banding. Good luck in any case.

I'm sorry to say but I see the same type of uniformity issues as mine has. Slightly darker gray background and put some left or right scene movement on it and you'll spot it as well.

You can always lower the gamma of photos to find bands. FYI, even when I bring the gamma correction down, it's damned clean. Remember, though, the 46 inch models seem to be doing pretty good in comparison to the 52 inchers. I'd like to see a 52 inch grey photo that's as good as some of the 46 inchers I've seen. Perhaps I'll be the first on monday.

No offense but you must be nuts to claim you see a uniformity issue from those pics.

I think a lot of people on this forum (me included) have looked at so many band and cloud pictures that the images have been burned into their retinas. Your set looks great in comparison. If this trend keeps going on the 46 inchers I'll be getting one soon. If it looks as good as that I'll be a happy camper. Enjoy.

I think it's an excellent idea to have created a dedicated photo's thread as often members have to go through pages and pages to find them and the search engine here is fruitless to use for such a thing. Congrats and enjoy!

I must also be nuts or on crack as I do see VERY VERY faint banding in your supersize picture. As someone mentioned you seem to be using a much brighter 'grey' screen than what most people use to determine banding/no banding so your brightness may mask any faint banding that. To see the banding I put some motion into the picture by scrolling it back and forth, up and down on my screen and also shift my screen to darken your grey. It's there but seems to be extremely faint. I would keep that set and I'm quite picky. I don't think anything would be visible in any actualy viewing. That's probably the cleanest d62/d92 I've seen so far (assuming darker grey screen doesn't reveal more). That almost band free set combined with d92 features/performance makes a sweet combo!

I will make sure I get my 52" D92 as close to band free as I can since I already worked it out with the B&M shop I will be buying it from. To be honest, If I have to exchange several times to get the right set ... well so be it ... I WANT THE 52" D92 ... like it or not, this set is a lot of bang for the buck. Considering I am getting the D92 52" for the same price as I can get the Sammy LN-S5296D.


I heard this is a great scene to test for Judder ,,,, how does the D92 deal with it ??

I'm getting the 46" sharp myself. How does the picture quality compare between the XBR2 and the 92u ? (clouding aside)

You must use low level flat gray test patterns on the D92 screen to see Banding.
I am afraid you are making an incorrect assertion.
The problem with setting the flat gray pattern at too high a level, when testing for Banding, is that the entire display is approaching or into saturation (white levels are in compression) and cannot any longer display the differences between the non-uniform brighter and darker portions of the screen. Just tonight I ran such tests on a store's d92 at varying levels of gray from the Digital Video Essentials disk and found easily the now typical banding (3 vertical bands) when the gray level was low. As I moved to full screen gray levels going up toward 100% the visibility dropped so low eventually the banding was no longer visible. This clearly proves the gray level must be low to see banding.

Changing the gamma of the photo or the display showing the photo will never recover this banding non-uniformity because it was lost at the D92 level in the first place, and there will be no remaining non-uniformity in the photo of significance to be processed (such as processing the photo with Photoshop to enhance the contrast or change gamma).

MY KTTV Images rule (experimentally verified) then is this:
You must use low level flat gray test patterns on the D92 screen to see Banding.

(Incidentally the Banding was never visible in any of the test footage in the last Image Evaluation section of Digital Video essentials).
