Mitsubishi WD 57831 or 731 v Sony A2000

I need you the experts help. I am new to the HDTV world (coming from sd crt set) but have read up alot on the different options. I have concluded that an RPT is the best option in terms of price/value. But now cannot decide between the Mitsubishi DLP and the Sony A2000.

I was all set to get the A2000 when I saw it in Frys. In the harsh lighting of Frys and next to the XBR and mitsubishi the A2000 looked terrible - kinda hazy and dim. The salesman attributed this to the weaker bulb and the video processing. And really pushed the new mitsubishi 831 and 731 models. What are your opinions between the two? Was it just a lemon A2000 that I saw on the floor?

Also he indicated that the only real difference between the 731 and 831 is that the 731 does not have memory card readers. Is there any other key differences? The 56 inch 731 that they had was a great deal. Thanks for the help.

I like the Mitzies better.

It was not a lemon A2000, just a too-bright showroom. I work in a similarly overlit Sears electronics dept and find that the sets that are torch bright enough to overcome the ambient light are the worst for real-world use (assuming you're not using the set on a sunporch, that is).

So you would recommend the A2000 over the mitsubishi?

I would strongly recommend the A2000 over the 731 series Mitsubishi for it's better black levels and cleaner picture unless you are going to be using it a lot in a very brightly lit room.

Thanks for the recommendation - do you know if the A2000 has better blacks than the 732 - it is supposed to improve on the 731.

Also should I buy now or wait a couple more months - I keep reading about all the new 2007 models that soon to be on the market.

I'm no expert, but, a salesman at Tweeter told me that when the new Mits models come out in the fall, they will no longer have a bulb but a laser instead that is said to last the lifetime of the television.

FWIW... I had 732 and it had a great picture... no complaints other than my wife and I both saw the rainbows and actually made her sick so back it went and replaced it with an A2000. A2000 is a great tv and I have none of the green haze/blob issues others have. In the end I think I will end up taking it back because the colors on the Sony are a bit cartoonish even after lowering the saturation trying to find an acceptable median. Certainly not as natural looking as the Mits. Keep in mind both the Mits and the Sony were calibrated using an i1 Pro and HCFR software. 480i on the Sony is not so great either (but who uses that anymore ). Both set will burn you eyeballs at default settings in a dark room so don't worry about the Sony being dim. Blacks are better on the A2000 but 732 wasn't bad at all. If you aren't bothered by RBE then I personally would choose the Mits but, not 731... atleast the 732 due to available PerfectTint.

In the end I think I will end up with either a Sony 46 XBR2 LCD (just didn't want to spend that much $ ) or wait for a 2nd gen Samsung LED DLP since that is supposed to eliminate the RBE.

Well, I just returned a 731 for a A2000. The lack of black detail on the 731 drove me nuts, and I tried every tweak in the Mitsu forum with little improvement. That along with a loud fan and longer than even my Sammy HLS-6187 start up time determined its fate back to the store.

I'm much happier with my A2000, even tho I lost 5". I'm liking the LCOS technology much better, fast start up, not loud, no spinning color wheel, no RBE, etc. The picture is awesome and I'm still tweaking/reading.

I will say SD is better on the Sammy, but I'm hoping I can improve it.

IMHO if the 731 would allow for more adjustments it would be a stronger contender. Hence the 732. And Mitsu needs to update its menu already, still the same clunky menu I had on my big old crt rptv 5 yrs ago.

Good luck.
