Can this LCD scaler be rated?

Hi - I've recently read/created some posts w.r.t. justifying the purchase of an up-converting DVD Player for my new Samsung LCD TV (LNS4051D). I've since come to the conclusion that depending how good your TV's scaler is, an up-converting DVD Player *may* not make a huge difference.

Case in point - I purchased the Sony NS75H up-converting DVD Player and it did not look all that different than my JVC XV-N44 Progressive scan (so I returned it). Lately I've been thinking about the OPPO 970HD (in my $150 budget range), but I believe it too uses the same scaler chip as the Sony 75H (Mediatek??). So, if they both use the same chip I'm assuming I'll receive the same disappointing results.

So my questions are:

1. Is my TV's scaler BETTER than the Sony and OPPO 970HD chip, and THAT is the reason why I am not seeing better results?

2. Is there a thread/info that discusses the performance/specs of my Sammy's internal scaler? If my scaler is better than most *budget* up-converting DVD Players, than at least I'll know WHY I am not impressed with the DVD Players' PQ.

Thanks.

I think if someone could direct myself (and a lot of other ppl in the same boat as me) to a link/website for TV scaler benchmarking (if one exists)... it may help a lot of us decide whether to spend $$ on an up-converting player. i.e. if their TV does a better job of scaling, then up-converting DVD players are a mere marketing ploy/cash grab for the rest of us stuck in Blu-ray/HD DVD 'purgatory' - lol

If no such benchmark exists for TV scalers, it could be they don't want us to know the very real truth.... that MOST newer HDTV models have a better scaler than MOST up-converting DVD players.... (within a $200 budget anyway). Just my conspiracy theory.

Let me put it this way - if someone could prove to me with HARD tech. specs that would indicate MY LCD TV has a poorer scaler than the OPPO 970HD - I would buy the OPPO today!!

Can anyone share this type of info? Or should I reword that statement ' DO any of the up-converting companies really WANT this info revealed?'

Are you comparing the DVD without any of TV's enhancement on?
Maybe the TV is altering the DVD so improvements are filtered out?

I don't have a Samsung but I can tell a difference of a 1080i upscale on my TV.
