Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive and HTPC

Anyone out there try the Xbox 360 add-on HD-DVD rom drive with their HTPC.
I read in Maximum PC mag. that MS is providing XP drivers for this. For $200.00
I was thinking of picking one up for playing HD-DVD movies thru the HTPC to my
PDP. I'll need a new graphics card with HDCP, most likely a PCIe type. This will
require a new motherboard for me but I'm due for an upgrade anyway. The soft-
ware players (PowerDVD 7 & WinDVD) are still being developed, but I think this will
come in time.

Any comments, experiences would be helpfull.

Thanks for the feedback slothy. This is the type of info I'm looking for, problems,
successes, etc. If you don't mind my asking, what graphics card are you using.
Are you using a DVI or VGA connection to your display.

I'm running over VGA with a non-HDCP compliant Radeon X1950 PRO video card to a 720p projector with success.

What resolution are you getting thru the analog connection? What software
player are you using. I was under the impression the analog output would
down rez to something less than 720p.

I too would like to use the VGA connection on my display (1366 x 768) because
my DVI connection will not support full rez thru Windows XP.

Using analog does not mean it's downconverted, that won't happen until (and if) ITC is introduced in 2010-ish. I'm running PowerDVD 7 Ultra. I'm running 1280x720 of course since I have a 1280x720 projector. The picture is wonderful!

Thanks for the info, this sounds promising. Looks like I can output 1366 x 768
to my PDP using the the VGA connection on the panel. I doubt my Gforce 6600GT
will handle the HD-DVD playback very well. Most likely I'll have to upgrade the
graphics card and motherboard.

If you can run that resolution (or most likely 1360x768) otherwise then it should work. I'm using Windows XP, BTW.

I doubt the graphics card performance is important, but then I haven't tried Nvidia cards and don't have hardware acceleration. I'm rendering in software and my Core 2 Duo E6400 CPU is doing fine so far.

I get this black screen problem also. Can either go to a later chapter and the video works or start the movie in stereo and then after playback starts switch to SPDIF out.

I like subtitles !! (Access menu while movie is playing normally works for the subtitle problem.)

Your correct, I'm currently running 1360 x 768 rez, 1366 isn't divisible by 8.

I think I'll order the drive soon. Where did you find the XP driver?

I'll try it with my current setup and see how well it works. I have a P4 3.0ghz
but only 512mb of ram at the moment. This works fine for SD DVD playback.
I can add ram cheeply enough. The 6600gt has 256mb ram.

I'll have to buy PowerDVD 7 Ultra.

update: last night i got a lil bored and put on vista home premium, using the latest powerdvd ultra download from site and nvidiA 100.59 drivers, i am now able to watch (at least king king) with out subtitles and black screen 100%. I prob should go knock on wood since it will prob not be working by the time i get home from work lol.

It seems you can get the driver from running windows update with the drive
connected? Is it really that easy?
