don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but....i use a sr-5002. i've had it about 6 months. last night our power blinked, and after i reset the surge protector everything was back to normal except for the receiver. the "standby" light was blinking fast but it refused to power up. after some forum reading i found out that it was in "protect" mode and that earlier models could be reset by unplugging and letting it set for a few minutes then plugging it back in. unfortunately, i guess i have a newer version which apparently was changed so that once it goes into "protect" mode it can't be changed back except by marantz itself or an authorized repairman because if there was damage done it could do more damage by turning back on. anyway, i get all that, but my real questions is if there is some way to keep the receiver from going to that mode every time there is some sort of disturbance with the power? it's under warranty but it's a pain to have to take it to get changed back every time and eventually the warranty will run out. i've looked into some power conditioners/surge protectors but i don't know if that's the answer. any answers/suggestions?

what kind of surge protector do you use ? i am using one also which is more than just a surge protector - its what they call a power conditioner - Belken Pure AV -

you should use a decent quality protector - not to say that it cant happen even if using a power conditioner - but i think you might have a better chance -
post #1143 of 1340
from what i've read, a power conditioner basically regulates the power going to anything plugged into it. so if the receiver never knows there was a surge or vice versa because of the conditioner, it would never go into "protect" mode right?

I've just picked up a refurbished sr4001 from Accessories4less to handle HDMI sources. I connected the hdmi #1 and 2 and toslink #1 to my Toshiba HD-A2. I have no center speaker, so I ran the left and right pre-outs to my power amp, and connected the surround speakers to the Marantz. I turned off the center channel on the on-screen display.

Stereo discs play just fine. But I cannot get any center channel audio by either hdmi or toslink using bitstream or PCM settings on the player. The Marantz tech support line put me on hold and apparently I was disconnected.

My concern is, do I have any real way of controlling what comes out of the pre-outs at all? Do they even allow center channel mix-down? The manual and readout are so confusing that I can't tell.

If not, I'll have to send the receiver back. I can't use an 80 wpc receiver to run these speakers.

Okay, after 3 long, testy phone calls to Marantz, I've been assured by a product support tech that it is impossible to create a phantom center using Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital TrueHD, regardless of how I connect the receiver to the speakers.

Is Dolby truly that stupid? Does that mean I'm forced to buy a no-longer in-production speaker to match my main speakers just so I can hear the dialogue on an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray? Is there no pre-amp that can definitely deal with this problem?

Sorry to hear about your situation. I was asking something similar in this thread before and never got an answer about the next gen codecs and what DSP was available. Specifically, I wanted to know if Dolby Headphone worked with one of the SRx002 series receivers when the input source is 7.1 LPCM (from a PS3) or Dolby TrueHD, DD+, etc... If anyone knows or can try it out, please let me know. I heard for example with an H/K receiver that now supports audio from HDMI, there is no way to use the Dolby Headphone on the next gen audio sources- there is simply pass through with no processing available on 7.1 LPCM. I'm was hoping the Marantz was more flexible but it sounds like if it won't do phantom channel, it may not do DH either?

For some reason the Marantz' stereo modes don't recover the center channel information either - except for "Virtual".

Hello guys

I´ve read about you guys who have succesfully turned off the "MULTI" light.
I´ve tried to turn it off by pressing the "MULTI" button on the remote till it says MA OFF, but the "MULTI" light doesn turn off.

Its really annoying cause i can´t have my 8002 on standby as long i dont fix it

please give me some advice how i could turn it off. I tried to read the manual but all it says is that it is the multiroom option...

Sorry if this is already on the forum (and the instruction manual) - I couldn't see if it was:

Many of my audio sources are 2 channel digital sources.

How do I play a 2 channel source through ALL of my speaker outputs on the SR7001? In particular, I would like the rear surround speakers (L&R) ideally to play the same output as the front (L&R) speakers.

I have tried all the different surround settings on the remote, but nothing seems to achieve this. Any help, very much appreciated.

Many thanks.

thats strange - it shouldnt stay on if its turned off - the only thing i can think off - and i am not sure about this -
do you have the speaker wires connected to the right plugs - maybe you have them in the second speaker plugs and thats for multi room use ??

double check that - never know -

I've had my SR7001 for about 3 months and its been nightmare living with it to say the least. It keeps going to "protect mode". It is not consistent as in I can have it run for a day without a problem and then all over sudden it goes into protect mode several times a day. It can happen at any volume level. I've called Marantz and the local authorised repair shop and both decided that my speaker wiring was incorrect. So I've checked the wiring myself, called in the guy who installed the system, called in the Geek Squad, have had friends check it over and no apparent problem has been id'ed. I'm trying to figure out if my problem is isolated; has anyone experienced a similar issue? I have a 7.1 set-up all KEF's and the MFW-15 sub.

Does anyone know for sure whether the SR9600 can be upgraded to 7.1 LPCM over HDMI or not? I can't find a solid answer to this at all.

I've had an SR9600 since it first came out, and it reports to connected devices (such as the PS3) that it is 7.1 capable over HDMI, however it has difficulty actually receiving that - you end up with it in a "confused" state where it reports receiving stereo PCM (no output channels indicated on display), although you can actually hear 5.1 (no center rears), while it will only allows selection of a couple of stereo/mono sound processing modes.

I asked earlier in this thread if there were any firmware upgrades and the answer was no. Bleh.
Can you link to that?

All I can find in this thread is discussion over supposed "new" and "old" SR9600s, where the new one was supposed to be able to receive 7.1 LPCM. However no one posting that information seemed to have first hand knowledge.

I am looking at receivers and would like either the 7002 or the 6003. Dose the new x003 series have features that the x002 does not that would make it more desireable? Or should I go with the 7002 for a little more power?

Whatever you decide, think VERY LONG and HARD about how firmware updates are handled. If you're willing to box it up and ship it back, or have a service center near by, and you're OK with that, than Marantz is a very nice unit. But if that seems like a lot of hassle, I would think long and hard about it. The days of buying an receiver and having it work flawlessly is long past.

Hmmm, just checked out 8003 (not sure about 6003) but it says in the spec sheet: And automatic firmware updates mean you never have to worry about having the latest version when your
AV8003 is connected to the web.

YAY!!!!! Finally

Any info would be appreciated.

I would like to know this as well. I pulled the trigger on a sr7001 refurb a few months back. It was great for my dvds but I never thought I would upgrade to a new monitor and getting a brd player so soon. I am trying to see if v.52 of the firmware upgrade fixes the 5.1 to 7.1 LPCM and what else is included in that upgrade. I currently have v.50 I am also wary about taking it to a local service center b/c of bad experiences in the past with another receiver(from HK) The closest one to me is 8 mile from my house. Funny how Marantz and HK both list this location as their closest authorized service center but HK has a customer rating of 2.9 out of 5 for that place and Marantz has no ratings. I also read through this thread completely and noticed someone state that sometimes an end user was allowed to update their firmware in rare instances w/o going to a service center? Anyone know where I can get the v.52 firmware? I have the RS232 cable!

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this problem. I would like to be able to use a sub with my stand mounted monitors for music, the problem is that I use the analog outputs of my modded MH CD25 and PEAK shows up and sometimes the sound is grainy. Switching the receiver (7001) to direct or pure direct mode fixes this problem, but then the receiver doesn't give the sub any signal. Is there any way around this?
As an owner of the SR9600, I have to say it is absolutely ridiculous that this receiver cannot be upgraded to handle the latest codecs (TrueHD, Master Audio, etc.). This was a very expensive receiver that while not advertised as being "future proof", certainly was suggested as being "upgradeable." The PS3, a 600 dollar piece of equipment when released, has been upgraded to decode the aforementioned codecs. As far as I can tell, there have been no such upgrades for this receiver. I find it even more bothersome (maybe even offensive, depending on how pompous I want to get) that there is some sort of tacit suggestion that I need to plop down ever more thousands of dollars to get a comparable piece of equipment. Yeah, I know the reality of playing in the home theater realm. VHS, SuperVHS, Laserdisc, DVD, HDDVD, Blu-ray etc. etc. But really? Am I just totally SOL here? Blah.

the only way around that from what i know is to use a Digital connected and the PEAK light wont come on or the sound affected - but i may be wrong -

I'm aware of that workaround, but then what's the point of having a modded Music Hall CD25?

I have a older Marantz. If I switch to stereo mode it plays two channel with the sub active. Can the 7001 do this?

yes, but in Stereo mode the peak light is on and at times the sound is distorted.

I'm thinking I may have to set my receiver to no sub and use the pre-amp outputs for my sub. Anyone have any configuration tips?

I bought a refurbed unit last year and had the issue of no audio when my Home theater room was complete..Luckly I found a factory reset in the manual that fixed it..Yesterday while adjusting some of the levels it did it again but the reseting isn't working..This is probably the 3rd time in 12 months this has happened...It seems like something in the software/firmware side since all channels quit and can't even get test tones...

Does anybody know a way to reflash or do a system reset different then the Multi and 7.1? I bought a new receiver and am not afraid to try and recover this one.
does the sr7001 eq the sub also? , like yamaha ypao does.

I picked up a 5003 yesterday and have a quick question. I have a 5.1 system and am using a PS3 for Blu-ray. I have it set to send pcm to the avr. It's connected via HDMI. Last night I put in a couple of BD's to check out the lossless sound. I know that the 5003 will not indicate DD True HD or DTS MA and it does display PCM, but I do not know what surround mode to set the AVR to. "Auto" wanted to set it to "stereo" which is not right and I'm not certain if the DD plus, Neo, etc. settings are correct either. Seems odd that "auto" wouldn't see multi-channel pcm and send it out to each speaker accordingly...I must be missing something. Any insights are most appreciated.

Any rumors on new Marantz receivers?

Figured it out. I had the PS3's output set to "auto" in the PS3's audio settings, which worked fine with my Pioneer. After going in and checking them all manually, I now have Multi-channel 5.1 PCM
