Looking for 2.0 Gain DIY Screen Material

As the title states. Looking to go with a 148" diagonal screen. Found an ebay seller who sells big screen material, but its only 1.3 gain. based on the throw calculator at projectorcentral, I need to set back my PJ about 30 Ft. With ambient lighting, i'm gonna need a 2.0 gain to get a good image going.

Its either going to be a Panny AX100U or a 1000U

So, any leads to a 2.0 gain DIY screen would be appreciated

Thanks

Get a Hi Power. Going with that high of a gain will require curving the screen, so go with the HP.

The High Power might work. HP has a gain of 2.8 -- IF your eyes are right next to the projector. If your projector is ceiling-mounted, or if you have chairs a significant distance (angle) away from the projector, you will find the HP is no better than a 1.0-gain screen.

Curving doesn't work with a retro-reflective material (reflects back to the source like a street sign) like HP. Curving the screen only works with angular-reflective materials (reflects roughly like a mirror), so you can make a big reflective "lens" out of the screen. I also think you'd have trouble making a curved screen or torus work very well with a digital projector, since it doesn't have the ability to focus separately at the corners nor to fix up the geometry problems produced by the curved screen.

I hope you have a very tall room if you're going with the HD1000U... it will require a lot of offset with a 30' throw/148" image!

I'd say the HP is your best option in a hi gain screen of that size.

CGIII is close. Gain was 1.8, cone was 60 degrees. You can punch up the gain a bit more to get to 2.

Well its going to be in my basement which will have a 9 foot ceiling, and I plan to mount it from the ceiling 30 feet back. The room size is going to be 37 feet long, and 29 feet wide

You mention HD1000U, I'm actually looking at the Panny AE1000U

Gary,
You filled it out more than I felt like writing.

Y2,
Is this your first pj? Have you seen any FPs?

Yep... buildin a new house, and plannin to do set one up in the basement. But the wife doesn't want it completely dark. So either high gain screen with a 1080p projector, or i'm also thinking of getting the Panny AX100U as well with a lower gain screen.

By the way, does Da Lite sell the screen material only? I went to their website, but couldn't really find any good info

Is there any reason you need to go with that big of a screen? Since you want to ceiling mount, you would have to curve a high gain screen. Of course, the better bet would be a Hi Power with a table mounted pj or the pj just above your head.

Don't get the Panny AX100, WAY too many problems with them. The other affordable bright projector that's getting very good reviews is the Epson 810/700. But you are right, the current 1080p and other dim projectors will need a higher gain screen with ambient light.

Thanks. I'll check them out as well. yes, i'm aware of the panny issues. Was planning to purchase it at costco anyway, since they have a good return policy

But we'll see... won't be buying it probably for another couple months, so still to look
