Aggravating HD DVD/Blu Ray experience at Best Buy w/ "The Departed"

I went to my local Best Buy today at lunch (the highes volume Best Buy in Texas). I went straigh to the HD-DVD's to pick up my copy of the Departed. There was none on the shelf. I then looked at the Blu Ray section and saw 20ish copies. I was like WTF?!?! Is Best Buy trying to screw over HD DVD by not carrying it?!?!?!

So I saw this employee walking by, and I asked him if there were are HD DVD copies. He said, "you're lucky, there is one left" as he pointed to an freestanding display where the SD versions were, and on HD DVD copy sitting haphazardly on top.

I asked him why they were all gone, he just shrugged his shoulders and said, "I dunno man, we've only sold a couple of the Blu Ray versions even though its better"

I almost slapped him.

Interesting and typical. I'm glad you got the one that you wanted.

The HD DVD was on the Feature Wall while the Blu Ray was only located inline, so I don't understand why you'd complain. That is actually prime real estate for new releases and titles located only inline are kinda the "lost" new releases. That was good for the HD DVD, as it made ours sell out in no time. We had 8 HD and 8 BD at our location. BD - 3 left at 12:00, HD - Sold out by 11:30 am.

lmao!!!

You should of HD DVD slapped him!

HD DVD slap
The act of slap a Blu-Ray fanboy across the face in a humiliating and degrading way with a HD DVD case of any movie.

Slapping is a normal response to getting Rayed

Actually the HD DVD was not displayed on the feature wall at all. It was not placed in the display slots at all. I was literally sitting on top of the display as is someone had changed their mind and decided not to get it, and just tossed it onto whatever horizontal happened to be closest.

Well technically he's right. The Blu-ray version does reportedly sound marginally better.

Slap a blue ray fan and it will leave a blue hand print on his face. If you slap him enough he will be eligible to join the Blue Man group (I think that's how they got started).

I can top that lol.

I ordered The Departed online from Best Buy. Got notification it was ready to pick up.

Figure I can go there during lunch at be out of there in 5 minutes. Walk in the store and hand the print out to the guy at the entrance as directed on the print out. He sent me to the in store pickup desk where I get ignored for 10 minutes.

Go back to the guy at the entrance and he calls a manager. Manager says to get in the Returns line which is out the a**. Stand there for another 15 minutes.

Finally get help and they bring me the SD version. I inform them I ordered the HD version. The guy looks around for a few minutes and then calls the manager and the look around for another 10 minutes.

Guess what? They don't have any stock. The manager asks me if I want them to order it from another store. I tell him thank you for wasting 45 minutes of my life, I think I would rather order it from Amazon.

F*** Best Buy.

Then the store made the decision to ignore a corporate plan. It should have been on the feature wall.

F*** Best Buy.

Honest Mistake if they pulled the Collector's Tin version, Warner or whomever does the pricing before shipping to Best Buy fudged the skus so that both are identical. I had my guys relabel all the collector's tins with the correct sku, but many didn't notice.

Westminster California
Bought it on-line at around 8:30am this morning, got the confirmation at 9:00am that they had it in-stock and was being held for me, went there at 7:00 pm after work ( after trying to buy at CC w/price match but sold out) walk to the on-line pick up at the desk at Best Buy, watched the guy search the cage several times for ten minutes, only to find out they have no more in stock, sold out, and offered a refund. I got a little ticked and he spent another ten minutes searching the back room to no avail. He told me that no one pulled one this morning. Enter the manager. He said he seems to remember seeing one on the floor and shows up with one after 5 minutes of searching. Probally his stash.

There were no places for the HD version in the display or on the floor. As far as player display, I say one on a 2 inch lcd. This BB is foll of a bunch of tools and *********s. I hate BB.

Westminster BB is full of idiots (especially that black guy with glasses in the CS). Go to the Orange one.

That's what happens to me all the time. The reason why I avoid BB at all costs

This happened at my Best Buy today as well. I got the last HD copy at 11:30 on my way to work. It was with the featured new releases. While the Blu-Ray was in the Blu-Ray section and completely stocked! I felt really good about that. Especially when, now check this out, I live in Chicago. We have been having a blizzard since 2 AM last night. That means, not only did the HD version outsell the Blu-Ray version. But they went through a friggen blizzard to do so. We HD fans are more dedicated than the post office it would seem.

the one in lakewood seems to be reall cool guys i bought my receiver and center channel from them and buy hd-dvds often same with the one in signal hill they actually look for stuff when you want it, now...

the cerritos store is full of overweight nerds that are to lazy to do anything. i got in an argument with the manager and an employee that reminded me of cartman but uglier and i havent been their since.

Here in Boynton I went at about 8:00 pm to try and score a copy. I was told by guy in the TV section that the HD-DVD version sold out early in the day. Then, one of the other AV guys overheard and asked if I wanted BR or HD-DVD. I told him I would prefer HD, but either would be okay and he asked me to follow him. He then produced 2 HD-DVD copis and handed me one. He proceeded to purchase the other himself.

I think he had a couple of copies stashed for him and another employee, who he shafted by giving me the other copy.

Seems at this BB that HD outsold the BD, and while the BD displays are prominent I was told that the HD players were outselling too.

My collection is about 2/3 HD and 1/3 BD, but the BD is growing. I was glad I was able to get the HD version of this one though. Funny enough, I actually have use for the combo.

Was it one of those cocky, chewing gum employees? That is the main reason I only go, Amazon baby! Those BBBs!!!
when i asked for a copy of it, i was told by an employee at FYE why are you buying that? bluray is going to win! when i asked him what format he had he told me he didnt have either so i told him "his f'n opinion means nothing then!"

I've had the same problem with on-line ordering/store pick-uo with both Best Buy and Circuit City, i.e. get an email that the item has been picked and waiting for pick-up only to find when I get to the store that the item has not been picked and they're out of stock.

When the management is confronted with the logical aurgument that the email shouldn't be sent to me unless the the item has actually been picked and put aside for me, thier answer is that is not always the case and the item is pulled from stock when you arrive!!!

That defeats the whole purpose of the on-line ordering/store-pick-up process!!!!
Online ordering/store pick-up is typically a miserable experience. At least they usually send a survey so I can tell them what a miserable experience it is.

The majority of the time, I get an "Item not found at store" messge. (the primary reason I would use it is because of how long it takes for them to get some stuff out on the floor and I don't want to wait in the store while they go hunt for it) Almost every time I got that message after having the online status show in-stock before getting the message, I've gone up to the store and found the item that was "not found" sitting right on the shelf. They would have to have not even looked for it.

Once I've had to wait at the counter for awhile as they brought the item from the shelf.

Another time, I just skipped picking it up since it looked like there was a 15-20 minute wait at the CS counter.

Suffice it to say, I rarely use BB anymore.

At least HALF of the time when I order online, I go to find they don't have stock and I wasted a trip.

If they seem to be out of HD DVD versions of movies, DON'T FORGET to ask them to look in the back. They often don't put the HD DVD versions out.

I had a horrible experince yesterday at Best Buy too. Went to two Best Buys all were sold out of the HD DVD version but had plenty of BR. I was so frustrated, I asked an employee where they all went being that its only 1:30 pm in the afternoon, both stores told me they got 4 in stock of both BR and HD and the HD sold out before noon (One employee said why don't I just pick up the BR version since its "better"). I was super frustrated and annoyed, Best Buy get a clue and order more of a release like that, more then four freggin people want that release.
You guys have just been unlucky. When I bought the HD-DVD add-on, it was selling out fast so I ordered online with CC, drove an hour and picked it up with no problems. I ordered "The Departed" yesterday late morning and picked it up a few hours later. It was sitting in the backroom with all my info taped to the HD-DVD so it was not possible to give it to someone else. Out of curiosity, I walked around looking for the HD-DVD in the shelves and couldn't find it anywhere. I believe they had sold out.

And if you have BOSE speakers, it sounds much better.

Same story for me without the 45 minute wait. That's the second time BB has screwed up an online order for me. I ended up canceling the order and picked up a copy from Fry's for $5 more with no hassle.

Rankings of the Best Buy I've been to in Orange County:

1. Orange (they have a huge section of HD stuff also)
2. Tustin
3. South Coast
4. Irvine/Lake Forest
5. Westminster (worst ever)
