HD DVD Combo discs at Hollywood Video & Blockbuster??

I know both these companies want to wait before stocking either high def format, still with Universal's combo discs available it would be nice to see those on the shelves. So my question is, how does one go about getting the combo discs in stock at your local store? Does Universal have to educate these rental chains about the benefits of the combo disc? That these chains can stock the discs and not alienate thier exsisting SD DVD customer base. Or does it come at the consumer level? Any ideas. I would love to have a reason to go back to Hollywood Video.

I think it comes down to cost for them. Will the cost of the disc make enough profits to justify the needed space. For them it would be no. Even if they only had a small 4ft section. How offten would those movies be rented. If their were DVDs their they would rent them a lot more. Thus more profit. So until HDDVDs become more mainstreem I don't see HDDVDs coming to retal stores anytime soon

You didn't read my post, I said HD DVD COMBO Discs. You know the disc with HD on one side and SD on the other. It makes perfect sense for the main rentals chains to carry them. This would bring in the HD crowd, and keep the SD crowd happy. Everyone wins. The rental chains could liquidate their exsisting stock of Universal movies, as they do on a regular basis anyways with new releases and replace them with combo discs. Plus there is no need for a special display. This is perhaps the most brilliant marketing scheme out there, it's simple and it brings HD DVD awareness to the public much faster. Sony has nothing that could touch this sort of advertising. Hundreds of people visit these rental stores everyday, if they saw HD DVD's and NOT Blu Ray's at their store, this would be a huge influence on their HD player decision making. Universal HD DVD COMBO's 's for rent immediately. This needs to happen.

So many people think Combo discs are a waste of time. That's short sighted thinking. Put them in rental chains and you've created an instant market with no competition

I wish more rental stores would follow your lead. I have contacted the Hollywood Video corporate office, I will post their reply. If others think this is a good idea, I would encourage getting in contact as well. It can't hurt.

I like your thinking in this area. Maybe we should contact the studios and HD heads to bring this to their attention as a great advertising tool as you said.

The Combo disc format makes much more short term sense that Warner's THD concept. By short term I mean the next 2-3 years. Even at the end of 3 years the ratio of DVD owners to High Definition DVD players will still be greatly in favor of standard DVD. Right now it's about establishing and maintaining a lead in the marketplace. This sort of tangible, take it home today merchandise experience will easily be remembered when it's time for Joe consumer to make the big plunge into the HD market. As he would have already rented a large number of HD DVD titles and be familiar with the brand name. This is just to big of an opportunity to let slip away. The greatest part of it, is these combo discs don't need to hide in some obscure section of the store that no one would see with a tiny sign that said HD DVD. These movies would replace their exsisting counterparts on the same shelf space and no one loses. It sure would be nice when Smoking Aces, Hot Fuzz, or the next big Universal titles to come out and see them on the New Release rack at your local video store as an HD DVD COMBO disc and not just the same old standard dvd.

This is an opportunity that needs to be seized upon immediately before the market catches up and there is a real need to have dedicated sections for Blu Ray and HD DVD. Why wait for that when the future is here, right now!

Shamless bump, I am convinced this is a great idea and would like people to actually help push HD DVD to the forefront. Do your part and contact Blockbuster and Hollywood Video!

I just can't let this thread vanish to page 3 in 1 day.

I can tell you that Hollywood in particular has just started using "insurance" to prepare to introduce the much more fragile high def formats. That said, people are incredibly stupid and hard on rentals, so I don't know how much I would trust them, especially since they are known to re-rent and sell items returned as damaged. It might be better at this time to have these as purchase only and at more early adopter friendly places like netflix.

I don't think you'll see a large amount of combo discs for HD-DVD in the near future, for Blockbuster anyways. The distribution channels we go through charge an arm and a leg for those combo discs (at least double the cost of a regular DVD). It isn't worth the added cost, at least for now.

So it appears the ball is in Universal's court to send the rental chains Combo discs.
