turntable ques....weight of tt mat issue

just bought a rega p1. really nice. i'd like to experiment w a little tweaking. i have an older rubber mat fr another tt that i'd like to check out on the rega. the rega has a felt mat thats really light weight. would the increased weight of the rubber mat be an issue for the tt motor? the tt is belt driven. if there an issue w platter speed or motor strain that i should be aware of? thanks in advance.

you should be OK, but keep in mind that the thickness of the mat will produce a corresponding change to your VTA.

my tt doesnt have a vta adjustment. how much leeway do you usually have w a turntable? the rubber mat is thicker than the felt mat, not by much, but it is thicker and denser. i am new to tt's. i'm on a steep learning curve. thanks

OCD, A very small difference may not be audibly perceivable, but keep in mind if you hear a degradation in the bass area you could be too far off the optimum setting. Ideally one wants to keep the tonearm / cartridge base level and parallel with the record.

Ideally, one wants to ensure that the VTA is 22 degrees. Since cartridge manufacturers often don't design their cantilever's with that angle (often to allow for standard installations to specific tonearms) and since many turntable's tonearm-height is adjustable, you can't depend on the "make the tonearm level" approach. A specialty protractor and a lot of patience is the best approach.

soundlover, good point, but given the fact he dosen't have any VTA adj, 'eyeball' level should work fine. Besides I set my table up for 180 gram pressings and tend not to fiddle with it, even though my aries 3 allows adj 'on-the-fly'
