I have everthing set to zero.
I used to have the SA connected directly to my external amp via the High Level In binding posts. When I was having problems with my pre-amp I had turned off the SA amp and I thought the mids sounded better on my 3.1's without hearing a noticeable change in the lower bass. So I left the SA off and later just hooked it up to the LFE on my AVR for HT. I do have a Spectron amp which helps mightily on the lower ends.
If you do upgrade to the 3.5's you will notice such improvements with the mid ranges, including awesome mid to upper bass, that you will actually forget about the lower bass. The mid ranges in the 3.5's totally suck you in where you discover, at least for me, this is where the music is.
Regarding upgrading the 3.1's to .5's, the .5's do have a new plinth which is much heavier than the old. I don't know how much that contributes to the mid to upper bass improvements but it is something that should be thought about if one is going to do the upgrade and decide they might want to keep the exisiting 3.1 plinth.
