Well folks, I've been to Oz and the wizard demo'd his new stuff and all I've got to say is, start saving now, it'll be worth it!
Yesterday I went to Anthony's house in central Jersey, I brought my original Solos down with me so he could be reacquainted with them, and he had; Reference 3.1, Reference AV, Strada, Reference 3.5, and Reference 5LS, speaker systems for me to listen to and compare. Anthony was a great host, and I had a nice time catching-up with some of what transpired in the growth and development of his business, and his speakers, since I'd bought my Solos from him in Brooklyn so long ago. I really enjoyed listening to the new speaker systems. The 3.5 is smoother sounding and more dynamic than the 3.1. The slam that they produced was just amazing. We were listening to a live jazz recording that was going pretty quietly and all of a sudden the drummer started pounding on the drum kit and it nearly knocked me out of my seat. The impact and dynamic contrast the drums had against the softness of the music the band had been playing just prior was amazing. The 3.1s on the same track were no slouch, but didn't seem to have as much dynamic contrast. The 3.1 also have some sibilance that the 3.5s didn't have, giving the 3.5s a smoother sound. If you have the means they will be worth the price.
The Reference 5LS was also a great speaker, but I didn't listen to them as much because to me, speakers at their price point are more of a novelty that I couldn't consider owning, so I just wasn't as interested. The Stradas paired with a single TR-3 sub were also pretty impressive, but it's was hard to go back after being spoiled by the Reference 3.5, and 5LS systems. I probably should have started with those instead of the 3.5s, They were good but didn't have the dynamics of the larger speakers, maybe adding a second sub would have brought them closer to the big boys. I didn't listen to the Reference AV for a long time either, just long enough to hear that the Strada is in fact a superior design.
Well I feel lucky I was able to spend my Saturday afternoon with Anthony, and hear first hand what he's working on now. I'm saving my $$ so I can get my 3.1s upgraded when that option becomes available, just don't tell my wife
