Built-In Wall AV Rack

I am planning on cutting a hole in my wall and installing an av rack for about 4-5 pieces. I have room behind, as the space on the other side of the wall is a storage room. I can reframe what I need to behind the wall for any size box. I would rather not have to build the box, install it, trim it, build doors for it etc. I would much rather purchase a box with adjustable shelves (maybe glass?), already trimmed that I can just insert into the wall, secure from behind and be done (just like a flush mount speaker is installed!) - has anyone seen this type of in wall, flush mount, rack / cabinet available? thanks,

I've seen that done with 19" racks, which come in various sizes, and have glass doors available etc. The shelving just screws into the racks. You can find some at Bud industries, for example.

Another option is to get kitchen cabinets from a place like IKEA; they have a choice of pre-trimmed cabinet bases and doors that you can choose from and screw into place any way you want. You're somewhat limited in sizes, though -- 30"H x 18"W or 30"H x 21"W are the most well supported I think. While kitchen counters are typically 36", there's typically a kick plate and counter that gets subtracted from that height to get the base cabinet.

thanks - the IKEA stuff looks cool....although it isn't really deep enough (only 13", need more like 15") I can probably just punch out of the back......thanks again!

You could look at the base cabinets, which are more like 22" deep (for a standard 2 foot kitchen counter depth).

I did a Raxess rack and flushed it into the front wall, with a dead closet on the other side. That makes hookup really easy, and access is through a normal closet door . The picture is before the room was done, and the Screen Research drop screen hadn't been installed yet. (Triad InRoom Gold Monitors and two InRoom Gold PowerSubs.)

I built a pedestal for a simple cabinet to sit on top of. I then built and installed the cabinet so it sits flush with the wall. Trim is attached to the cabinet and not the wall though I did caulk the trim/wall gap. Because the cabinet sits on the pedestal I can pull the entire cabinet out of the wall should I need to add additional feeds into the or out of the cabinet space. I guess you would call this a semi-pertinent installation.

Old thread but this looks like the right place...

I too am looking for something similar. I live in a condo and the main hallway in my suite leads into the living room and dining room. If you stand at the end of the hallway, the dining room is to your left, the living room to the right...

ln the right side of the hallway is a floor to ceiling closet. Facing the closet means that the left wall of the closet makes up part of the wall of the living room.

What I would like to do is put in a cabinet with 4 shelves for AV equipment and a cupboard and/or drawers below. Do any such cabinets exist pre-made or is this something I will need to go custom for?

I have seen that and haven't seen anything quite what I am looking for there.

I think what Paul did here is what you're looking for. The rack itself is pretty inexpensive and the frame-out isn't too tough. Nice job Paul!

The IKEAs can be great built in cabinets. I used them with great success. I also put a Middle atlantic in one of them. I have back access to them all from the rec room.

I created the frame and boxed it out and then slid a mid atlantic rack into it. Pics in my sig link

Figure out what you want and have a cabinet shop bid it. This is a very simple cabinet to build and should be affordable.

Good luck,
Jason
