Which dvd player to get for my situation? connection confusion

Ok, this is the deal.
I have a toshiba 52HM84 DLP tv. It has an HDMI jack as well as component jacks. I've also got a yamaha HTR5950B reciever. It has component video jacks only, no HDMI.

I was considering buying the OPPO DV-970HD hoping to improve my image quality. I was using my xbox360 to play dvds (yes i know it's a terrible dvd player in terms of image quality) but I've sold all my gaming stuff so I need a dvd player now. What I need to know is:

Can I use the HDMI cable to connect to my tv for video only and use a coaxial or optical cable for audio? Since my reciever doesn't support HDMI I can't use the HDMI for both. Is there a point to buying this dvd player if I can only use the component cables?

What would you recommmend for my situation? And if I can't connect with both HDMI and a digital audio cable, what would you suggest I buy instead of the oppo? I don't want to spend much money, as much as the oppo or less. I just want some good image quality for not a lot of $$$.

Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

Yes, this is often done.
