Looking for a 2.35:1 screen with masking

Hi there!

My HT basement is almost done and I ended up deciding to go with a CIH setup because I knew if I didn't that I would always regret it. I've got the AX100 and will first use the zoom method until my funds recover to get an anamorphic lens.

I've been back and forth and the screen. I was going to use a DIY painted MDF board for my screen but now I'm back to considering a commercial screen. I really think it's important to have masking. Motorized is not important. What are my options for the most affordable 2.35 screen with built-in masking? I remember following a link around here to a masking kit for DIY screens but can't find it now.

I of course like the cost of a DIY screen, but I'd rather have a really nice screen then one done on the cheap. Looking for opinions and thanks!

Do you need an AT screen? Have you considered an SMX screen and making some masking panels/drapes.

You don't need to buy a commercial screen to get good quality. This is especially true if you only need a white 1.0 gain screen. Browse the screen forum for more ideas.

As far as screen masking contact Don at HTIQ. www.htiq.com He can work out a price for 2.35 masking.

If you don't want motorized masking I would just use curtains on the side of the screen and manually pull them across.

I had the same problem plus I needed a motorised screen. My option was an Electrol Dual Masking from Da-Lite.

If you are usin a frame fixed screen you can go for easier setups.

i use the Electrol dual-masking from da-lite...my screen size is 115" x 49".

for a bit of additional 'pop' i went for the 1.7 gain which is called the Pearlesent.

i use the Sony Pearl and ISCO III. with the 1.7 screen there is plenty of gain. i am using the low bulb setting, but i still keep the brightness turned down...so even when my bulb ages it should still look great.

my only concern is i might want a curved screen so i may need to sell this screen.

the motorized masking system works great...there is a bit of noise as the bottom weighted bar drops into it's nest.

my son and i installed the whole thing in about 5 hours. it was easy to align and level. once the hangers were on the wall everything just went together.

Thanks for the info all. I'm currently leaning toward the Carada BW screen and getting an HTIQ system to do 2-way masking. Anyone out there with this setup? Because I'd be adding masking should I get the Carada Precision frame instead of the Criterion ?
