Help the cause

With Wayne's very unfortunate news recently, the following announcement comes at a very appropriate time. Having lost my mother-in-law recently to cancer, and other family members over the years the online community may now be able to help in some fashion.

Intel announced today a program similar to Seti, where peer-to-peer networking will be used to accelerate the development and testing of drugs for life-threatening diseases.

Hop on over to www.intel.com/cure and download the software. In our small way, we may actually help.

Thank you,
Chivs

Chivs,

Thank you for passing this link along. I had heard about this type of program on CNET radio a few weeks ago and was interested. However, I had no idea where to download the program or get information on it until now.

I'm working on setting up a team on the ud.com site for the avsforum members. When the website stops acting up I'll post the link to join.

Hi Andrew:

___Thank you for the link. I am downloading it now and will have it running on at least 2.25 GHz worth of HTPC’s within the hour. This is a cause I hope everyone will consider and a team approach makes it that much more interesting. This gives us all a reason to use our High Performance HTPC’s for the common good.

___Thanks again.

Chivs,

can you change the name of this thread, I feel the message maybe being missed. If you can't then create another one. Either way the title needs to be something like.

I'm still trying to create an avsforum.com team, but I keep getting an error message. It's nearly time to hit the hay, so if one of you night owls wants to give creating a team a shot (assuming you have registered the program that you downloaded from Intel), here's the url:

Wayne,
Can you change the subject line of this thread to something that catches peoples attention, like Important news, please read.

Thanks,
Andrew

I'm not convinced the United Devices client works behind firewalls (at least not mine). [edit 04-25-2001] SOCKS5 works (see below).

I'm not sure UBB allows changing subject but if so, I prefer accurate subjects over generic "read me" messages (which I ignore). Perhaps:

** Join AVS team to cure cancer **

or something like that.

Can someone help, please, with my installation problem?

I don't know if this is the firewall issue alluded to above, or if something else is wrong.

I get this error message when my Win95 system at work boots (behind at least one firewall):

Error loading UD Agent
Error number: 48
MSG: File not found: UDwin_1701_2423.DLL

However, UDwin_1701_2423.DLL exists in C:\\windows\\system directory.

I've tried an uninstall & reinstall using default choices in all cases, but no luck.

Great idea to have the team website. How come your machine hasn't logged any time or results yet? (Too recent?)

I've logged about 10 hours so far according to my user profile. However, I think the team profile will only log the hours for those tasks started and completed while you are on the team. (Not sure if this requires re-sarting the UD client or not.) I think this is done to prevent team switching and things of that nature.

Also, yoga, did you get the Windows 95 version of the program from Intel's site. I believe there one version for Windows 95 and another version for all other OS's.

kahnoodie:

Yep, Win95 version. Re-downloaded just to make sure. Removed, reinstalled: no improvement.

Does anyone have this working on Win95 behind a firewall?

Yogaman,

Try installing the Winsock 2 update from Microsoft, see message below:

http://forum.ud.com/ubbcgi/ultimateb...c&f=6&t=000240

The winsock update can be found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d...s2/Default.asp

Good Luck!

Updating from an earlier post, I have the Windows 2000 client working behind a firewall using SOCKS 5. No joy with HTTPS (likely my firewall config); SOCKS 5 works so I didn't look further.

I also have the Win98 client working.

Tip I learned:
  • Win98 is unreliable. Ok, that's not a newsflash but the UD agent can lose some data if Windows 98 hangs. Periodically (preferably when the percentile changes) exit the UD agent to flush data to disk. Details are here.

The user orionpierre created some helpful FAQ threads:

Links to Common Useful Answers - from United Devices, Message Boards, Start Here: The New Members Forum.

I hope more AVS members join; right now, we are a team of two (rupret and miksmi).

Hi Mike:

___Do you know how I can transfer my 2000 points to the AVScience team instead of under my own? I know this was asked in the past with no answer and I still have to finish writing my check to Uncle Sam this evening so I will not be able to look up the answer tonight …

___I want to thank you all again for offering your HTPC’s CPU cycles for future cancer patients in particular. This is truly a great cause and one our specially built HTPC’s were truly made for.

___Thanks again to you all

Wayne, I searched; this says points don't follow the user. You could switch teams (hold the Seinfeld jokes http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif ) now and ask for a transfer later. BTW "switch team" returned 0 results; apparently "change team" is the vernacular.

Will, oops! I meant to reference my .sig; thanks for clarifying.

Note: the UD site is extremely slow; they switched servers today and may have periodic outages. Stats take up to72 hours to post; patience is a virtue. UD members can receive system status updates (read: server outages) by emailing an empty message to:
UnitedDevicesFlash-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
