Is it just me or does it seem that most SACD releases tend to sound better than most DVD-A titles?
I know this is a very subjective inference as it depends on how well a particular title was mixed, etc.,..
However, I find many of the SACD's I own tend to come across beautifully balanced with very rich clean sound, while the majority of the DVD-A's (I own) usually exhibit good sound quality with poor distribution of surround levels (poor balance).
I can always count on a new SACD title bringing the best out of my system even when set at a conservative, or moderate, level. While many times I have to go into the speaker-level menu to off-set something to get the proper balance for DVD-A's. I'm using a brand-new Denon DVD-3930CI universal player which is very revealing.
I own many SACD titles by:
Elton John- very good
Steely Dan- very good
James Taylor- very good
Nora Jones- very good
Peter Gabriel- very good
John Coltrane, "Love Supreme" (stereo)- decent sound quality, poor mix.
DVD-A titles:
Beatles, "Love"- very good
Joni Mitchell, "Both sides Now"- good sound, poor mixing.
Billy Cobham, "Spectrum"- poor mixing
Grover Washington, "Wine Light"- very good
Fleetwood Mac, "Rumors"- very good
Miles Davis, "Tutu"- good
Others I've returned (probably 8 or 10)- good sound quality, poor mixing
