60" Grand Wega Turns Off By Itself? - Help Please

I have a 4 year old Sony 60" XBR2 that has been a great TV. Now it will all of the sudden turn off while in the middle of watching something and then turn itself back on.

Do you guys have any ideas? Thanks in advance.

My display, the exact (or similar/same) model as you're describing, recently displayed the *exact* same symptoms. I have a KDF-60XBR800, a 60" Sony Grand Wega II LCD RPTV, that I purchased in February of 2003. It was almost 4 years old to the day when it started turning itself off, then spontaneously powering up again after 30 seconds or so. At first it would only do it once a night or so and becoming more frequent till it was doing it every few minutes.

Anyway, long story short if it's not too late. I talked to the service tech at the dealer where I bought it. He said unplug the set, come pick up a new projector lamp/bulb (I'm not sure of the "correct" terminology?) and take it home and replace it then plug it back in. I did and the set has worked fine since I powered it back up.

Everyone told me, "it's not the projector lamp, they simply get dimmer till they go out completely". Everyone was, apparantly, wrong. At least in this case.

Good Luck,

Thanks for your response. That sounds exactly what my TV is doing. I do hesitate to buy a lamp because if it is not the lamp, I may be out a couple of hundred dollars that I could put towards a 70".

I tried keeping it unplugged all day yesterday and that had no effect. It appears to be getting worse.

I feel your pain. I was in the same boat. I kept thinking, if I spend $199.00 plus tax on a lamp and that doesn't fix the problem......

But the service tech assured me it would. So, they've been really good to me and I figured worst case I'd haggle my dealer out of the two hundred bucks on whatever I bought there next. I was still HIGHLY suspect it'd fix the problem because everyone kept telling me, lamps get dim then go out. Period.

I took the leap of faith when my Wife Approval Factor was dipping to an all time low because of the lack of TV in the den. I'm glad I did. If your display is the same model as mine, the same age, the same symptoms.. I'd bet the lamp/bulb replacement will fix it.

Good Luck,

Well, I got it and put it in after your post yesterday afternoon and it has not turned off by itself since. It looks like that fixed it.

Thanks for posting your experience. I was almost ready to chunk it until you posted (although I would like to have a reason to get the 70").

Glad it worked out for you. Oh, and sorry I couldn't give you a reason to by a new 70". If you find a good reason, let me know I'm looking for one too. Just have to "sell" it to the wifey. lol

Hey, I have also had to replace my lamp in the past too but when I need to do so, it would power off and the green light would flash and turn red, in this case though, it goes off for about 30 seconds to a minute and will then come back, the key thing in this case is my green light never flashes or turns red.

My question to you guys is did your green light remain solid or did it flash and turn red.

Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,

I have the same problem, but when it was the lamp the stand by light would turn red.

Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.
