AppleTV - Converting my files into compatible format

Thread Starter
Hello,

I am thinking about purchasing the AppleTV, even though I won't be able to purchase movies for a while (in Canada). My goal is to stream movies from my computer, and my movies are in these formats:

1) DVD rips (.iso, .img, video_ts)

2) Xvid/Divx/Mkv/Mpeg/

How do I convert these into the H.264 format compatible with AppleTV ?

What software do I use? I am using Windows XP.

Thanks

Francois

You can use Nero 7, handbrake, X.264 and theres probably more.
You might want to wait and see what are the exact limits of the appletv.

I think anything that can create iPod video. I think the formats are compatible.
Also here are 7 others:

I'd also know that mpeg streamclip and avidemux have windows versions. Both are powerful.

Handbrake has been forked so check out MediaFork. It's an updated, and hopefully, properly maintained version of Handbrake.

You might want to wait a bit and see if the apple tv will support mulit-channel aac.

No word on this yet. It makes logical sense (why else have a optical out) but the ipod is only 2 channel ....

Can someone tell me if the AppleTV will read .mp4's encoded using Handbrake's PS3 setting?

Why you ask, because I have a PS3 and much of my library is already encoded to the PS3 format, but I've decided I like the AppleTV interface better. Thx in advance.

One option would be to install XBMC on it, after that it would play almost anything you throw at it. Within the limits of hardware of course.
