Help me decide which sub to get.

I've been reasearching and lurking around for a while and have my choice narrowed down to 3 possibly 4 subs. The subs I'm looking at are the SVS PB12-NSD (or the SB12-Plus), the HSU Research VTF-3 MK 3, and the Outlaw Audio LFM-1 Plus sub. I would be using it in a 50/50 music/ movie system pairing it with my Polk Audio surrounds. Any recommendations or opinions on these subs?? I'm trying to get the best sub I can for the money. If anyone can suggest another sub to consider I would appreciate it greatly. Thanks in advance!!

Tell us what room size, any rooms openly connected, any doorways open?

Listening habits? Reference, Loud, Med, Low...

I'm sorry for not giving more info. I'll have to measure the size of the room, I'm not sure what the exact size is. There are french doors that open into the dining room that I leave open all the time. I usually listen to my system at a medium to loud level. I never really crank it. I know that all the subs that I have listed are way more than I need now, but I plan on getting better speakers and amps in the future, as well as having a dedicated theater/music room. I just realized that a similar question was posed in another tread. I read that one and got a pretty good idea of which sub to get. But if you can give me some guidance I would be most grateful.

The room is around 2000 cu. ft. (if I figured it correctly)

Three performers for sure. I do not think you would be disappointed with any of these. I have personally heard the SVS and HSU. The Outlaw I have not heard but based on what I know of their pre/pro/amps, I would believe they have done their homework and put together a capable product.

It would be real tough to make a good recommendation without knowing the specifics of your room. I do believe that any one of the choices you have mentioned would perform well in all but the most cavernous locales.

I've also been thinking about a similar set of subs. I don't hear anyone mention the Aperion S-12. Does that make the same category of sound? I think the benefits I thought of with it are:
  • HDF instead of MDF -- maybe better construction?
  • Better match with their speakers (was also thinking about them)

But the disadvantages are
  • Side facing
  • Sound?
  • Company not as geared towards subs, so maybe they are missing some details that HSU/Outlaw/SVS thought of (please tell me)

Any opinions?

Other disadvantage of the S-12 seems to be lower power output.

For 50/50 listenting habit in a not so large room I actually might give the vote to the SB12+.

Sealed design would really work well with your 50/50 listening habits.plus that sub has options for room size built into the amp which makes tweeking it into your room and system pretty easy......plus that sub is VERY VERY VERY small. The others you are talking about are massive in comparision.

If size doesn't matter......and you are goign to have a dedicated HT room down the road....the HSU 3.3 might be the way to go right from the start.

I agree with the last poster. HSU 3.3 has my vote. Such a great value for the money and I personally love HSU and there customer service.

We are trying to have people stop saying stuff like this.

I know its harmless....but for some reason the Admins do not like when SVS fans say it, and we are not even allowed to post about a good experience, so we are trying to end it all together


But the 3.3 is a great sub from what I have heard and read!

bgillyjcu: I just noticed in your HT pics that you have the same tv I do. How did you mount your center channel on top of the tv?? I had to put mine in the stand just below it. I would much rather have it above the tv like you do.

Back on topic, I guess the HSU 3.3 it is. Although I may spring for the SVS PB12-NSD/2. Thanks for the input guys!!

I used an Omnimount Center Channel Speaker stand....

It works great

the NSD/2 would give you more BANG.....but you might lose a little SQ....there is no doubt the 3.3 is one hell of a sub though. Either way you will smile when you hear the new sub you pick!

the HSU 3.3 looks to be one of the best values in subwoofers right now, its the one i would probably get if i was in the market for a sub. the dual driver SVS might have an output advantage, but i think the HSU may be a better value while delivering superb all-around performance.
