Horns

What would be the general consensus on this forum as far as Horn Designs for subs.I'm new to this forum and there seems to be a lot to digest here, but i get the feeling no one has heard what horns can do in the listening environment. The designs here are great but costly,to me.I used to spend a lot of money on quality speakers and still do for my tops.I see a thread about $25 12s for sale and it gets a lot of hits, but i would put my 8 inch sub up against 4 of those 12s with less power and smoke em,lower, louder, deeper and with more impact than you probably ever felt.I dont think that horns get the respect.HORNS RULE!

....and how big would that horn be for your 8" woofer? Have any pictures of the construction? Horns don't get enough attention, and they are trickier to design, with looser correlation to the models, and more complicated to construct. When working properly and EQ'd for good response, they can do some impressive things.

The box size would be 18 by 18 by19 with an 8 inch speaker and was modeled for corner reinforcement, which in turn adds to the throat length. The sub amp used has a 6 db bass boost in the 30 hertz range and a 4th order low pass filter. This is one tight sub and during movies can play effortlessly with low distortion and great detail.Music on the other hand is tuneful and clean at any volume. This speaker will have you getting out your favorite music and movies to hear what you have been missing all along. The impact alone will drop your jaw.I will get some pictures up soon to show you how they were constructed.ENJOY THE MUSIC AND MOVIES.

People here know what horns can do. The problem today is that people want to reach
single digit hertz with authority. Wayne's 12pi bass horn starts to drop off about 40hz,
a stack of them, about 30hz. People in HT audio consider 30hz high frequency, not low
frequency - joke ... lol

A stack of 12pi horns for 140dB+ would be nice, then for <30hz, augment this with
an array of monster woofers and monster power. This will do the trick up to 125hz.
Then you need mains to keep up................ lol

I got to say one of the best folded horns that I have herd is a Klipsch design that Electro-Voice used and it was the Aristrocrat... I have one with a old Electro-Voice 12" TRXB in it and it has good true sound and nice bass......

i've been reading your other post about the 8" horn and was wondering, what amp are you powering this with??

I'm using the PE #300-805 and it has way too much power for this speaker, you could get away with a cheap 50 watt amp as long as reliability is not an issue. The other day i had nothing better to do so i built a box that would hold 2 8s and so far i like what i hear. These boxes are not small by any means, but thats the nature of folded horns.I'm not an expert on horns ,but listen to other builders and try to go from there.Go ahead and build a horn, there cheap for the price to performance ratio.
