Can PS3 do DTS-HD Master audio?(MA)

Thread Starter
I want to rent some movies that put my sound system through the ringer. I am looking for PCM movies and DTS-HD movies. I know PS3 does PCM but does it also do DTS-HD? If I am watching a DTS-HD movie do I just set my reciver to PCM?
The PS3 does not currently decode DTS-HD. Although there is a rumor that it will be included in the March firmware update. You're 'stuck' with PCM and Dolby-HD for now!
Although PCM is all you need... DTS-HD is supposed to be same quality as PCM, just less bandwith usage, which isnt problem for BD players anyway...

PS3 with the April 15th update will now support DTS HD

With the update, will the PS3 bitstream DTS MA, and Dolby True HD now or should we continue to leave it set for Multi-channel PCM?
They did not specificy, but there is a 98% chance you will NOT be able to bitstream

That's fine. I don't need to switch to all HDMI 1.3 cables then.

HDMI 1.2 and 1.2a cables, (from what I have read) do not support bitstreaming Dolby True HD, DTS MA or Deep Color. 1.3/1.3a/1.3b do support them.
not to start another bitrate 'war' or whatever, but is that 24.5 mbps quote accurate ? thats higher than many movies ?!

KO

interfaces, not cables

Sorry _Avarice_, I'll try not to bump again. 4 or 5 DTS threads keep bubbling to the surface today. Why we needed one resurected from February is anyone's

This has been debunked millions of times in the forums, in the press, and by honest cable manufacturers. HDMI 1.3 is only the ports and decoder hardware. Cables have nothing to do with any of that. Let me put this in big, bold letters so people understand it:

Every single HDMI cable is compatible with every single HDMI version.

Anyone who is trying to sell you a cable based on "HDMI 1.3 compatibility" is lying through their teeth.

That was a little hard to read. Ok great. So your saying there's no difference at all between the 1.2 versions Monoprice used to sell and discontinued and their current stock of "1.3 verisons"? ..and they're both capable of bitstream support for the new codecs?

Should I buy the "standard speed", "Ultra High Speed" or settle for middle grade "advanced high speed"..

I buy gas that way as well.. Yeah right :0

Guys, guys................

Again, there is no specific "spec" for HDMI cables.

All HDMI cables work the same. It's the port and hardware and firmware that determine HDMI interface version 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 etc etc etc.

Hey take a walk over to J&R and ask the guys downstairs in the TV dept if it matter which HDMI cable you buy.

Then mention Blue Jeans Cable and see their expression.

Ok so the PS3 does not bitstream, I know that already. My question is on my 805-TX. I understand that the PS3 does internal decoding but with this new DTS- HD-MA upgrade, what will my receiver display when im playing a BD with DTS-HD MA.?

WIll it still display Multichannel (PCM) or display DTS-HD-MA?

Thank You.

lol..i was there yesterday picking up another SD card...those guys down there are great...

Im going to go in there and play mr dummy and see what they say..

I actually enjoy going to best buy and acting like a dumb consumer like I know very little about technology and have them explain 1080p and etc to me. It boggles my mind what some people leave that store thinking....

lol
I think the only difference is the certification itself. I believe that to sell a cable as 1.3a compatible you just have to do the required tests. So all Monoprice would have to do is make sure their cable passed the certification then all of the existing stock could go from 1.2 to 1.3a. For marketing and cost reasons of course there would be no need to market a 1.2 cable if your certified as 1.3a. Someone can correct me if I am wrong on this

I would imagine that it will display DTS-MA as that is what it will be recieving from the PS3.

Oh don't get me wrong, some of those guys down in the TV and even upstairs in the audio section know their stuff.

But they are SALESmen and apparently don't know about any other cables besides Monster cable.

It will display Multichannel PCM, PCM, or some derivative thereof (depending on your AVR). You will never see Dolby True-HD or DTS HD-MA "light up" when using PS3 as a blu-ray player.

Now does that matter? NO
