Can PS3 do DTS-HD Master audio?(MA) - Page 3

The PS3 hardware is unable to output HD audio (neither Dolby nor DTS) in bitstream format. HD audio REQUIRES an HDMI connection to the audio device. Can't make it any more simple than that. The PS3 will not bitstream advanced audio formats to your receiver. It will not send advanced multi-channel formats over optical.

Don't fret and worry yourself WHY it can't, it just can't, okay? That's how Sony designed it. Until Sony puts different hardware inside the console, that's how it ever shall be. OF COURSE it would be easier to just output the bitstream (whatever it is on the disc) and let the receiver decode it, but that is not the development path Sony chose. Perhaps short sighted on their part as then they could sell more high end Sony AVR's to decode the bitstreams (for those who are brand conscious and would buy a Sony AVR simply because of the brand name), but whatever their reasoning this is just how it is.

And you'll NEVER get HD audio over PS3's optical audio output EVER, the bandwidth simply does not exist with the standard utilized. The chips used are incapable.

Thank you for your post it was very clear and concise...I think a lot of people want to know this information. The ps3 is hdmi 1.3 not 1.3a which is the version that bitstreams. This is exactly the reason I sold my PS3.

To be completely accurate, you need to preface HD with "multichannel." TOSlink can carry 2.0 channels of HBR audio within the current spec. It is also not for lack of bandwidth that multichannel HBR isn't possible over optical. It's all about agreed-upon standards and content protection.

Seriously though, ANY HDMI cable you can buy (granted that it works in the first place) will let you use every capability the PS3 has.

Q. What is the difference between a Standard HDMI cable and a High-Speed HDMI cable?

Recently, HDMI Licensing, LLC announced that cables would be tested as Standard or High-Speed cables.

* Standard (or category 1) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 75Mhz, which is the equivalent of a 1080i signal.
* High Speed (or category 2) cables have been tested to perform at speeds of 340Mhz, which is the highest bandwidth currently available over an HDMI cable and can successfully handle 1080p signals including those at increased color depths and/or increased refresh rates. High-Speed cables are also able to accommodate higher resolution displays, such as WQXGA cinema monitors (resolution of 2560 x 1600).

I assumed the Incread color depth meant deep color that hdmi 1.3 is capable of.

Here's a question for you (I asked in another thread but I'm thinking it might be a PS3 specific issue.)

Will the PS3 only support muli channel PCM after the update this week?

I just bought a brand new Receiver yesterday (The Sony STR-DG720) because it advertised it supported up to 8 Channel uncompressed PCM. I have my PS3 plugged into it through HDMI, and my PS3 is set to PCM. When playing Pirates of the Caribbean 3, I have it set to uncompressed 5.1. My Receiver then displays PCM when playing the movie, but it doesn't play it out of all the channels. All that's lit up on the Receiver are the left, right, and subwoofer channels. And I'm not hearing anything out of the back two speakers. Also, on the receiver I have AFD set to auto. I don't know if that matters.

smart man.

PS3 currently supports multichannel PCM through both uncompressed PCM tracks and Dolby True-HD tracks.

AFD is auto-format direct, Sony's proprietary name for a "direct" sound mode that either completely bypasses or uses minimal circuit processing. Unfortunately, I don't have any firsthand experience with a Sony receiver, so I'm not familiar with their settings (or quirks). I'm assuming since you have any signal at all, you went into the PS3's audio menu and chose HDMI for output, correct?

Yep. Did that.

You mentioned that you had asked this question in another thread. Was it this one? If not, I'd ask around there as those guys should be able to help you relatively quickly.

Run a search in that thread first to see if anybody had similar problems. I've found that most every AV-related issue I've ever had has been had and solved by somebody else first

That was the one. I actually seem to have fixed it by resetting the PS3 to it's factory settings
