You are always welcome ! Glad to hear you got an XA2 . As you can tell I love mine. Looking forward to hearing your impressions. It does a splendid job of up conversion. I also use some picture settings "Renon graphics" on less than stellar HD DVd's . Johnathan

Yup it is that last 10% that seems to take the most time. I was thinking about having a meet myself but just like you I didn't think anyone would be interested. I guess maybe they would be. I will have to think about having some sort of get together.

Just wanted to post a quick update more to follow. I received my JVC RS1 DILA 1080P projector. With a native 15000/1 contrast ratio it looks beautiful ! Here is the final installation. Johnathan

Johnathan - That is killer looking! You originally had a 720p projector right? Can you appreciate the additional resolution? I'm sure the contrast ratio is definitely a noticeable upgrade!

I can tell you that my previous Sony HS10 was no slouch at HD. But the JVC is truly in a league of it's own. Yes the 1080P is noticeably sharper with finite detail ! Also I am very sensitive to screen door. In bright scenes I could see it at 18 feet on my old set up.

I can now sit just 9 1/2 feet from the same 119" screen and not see screen door on causal viewing. But if I stare and try to discern it I can just make a little of it out. Really it goes away after 4 or 5 feet on my Hi Power screen.

The image has a very life like quality with the talked about window effect "like looking through a window" on many scenes ! I don't have the old Sony for a side by side but I really see much more detail in some scenes but some others are not day and night in detail !I am sure that this is specfic to the material !

My Sony was getting long in the tooth 4 years old. This new JVC RS1 has amazed and wowed me every time I turn it on. I have just over 90 hours on the bulb . It seems to get better with each use.

Many of the problems you have read about "over saturation, bright corners, loud fan " simply don't even peg my interest meeter ! They are so very small in the scheme of things they just don't come into play in my set up ! Johnathan

Johnathan,

Looks great how about some new screen shots with that fancy new JVC

(not to good mind you I'm not ready to upgrade my 333 just yet I'm still breaking it in and you already "forced" me to buy that XA2 with your darn glowing reviews )

Room looks great.

Cheers

The reputation of the 333 is glowing from what I remember ! I will try to shoot some shots tonight ! I am off for the next three days . How are you liking your XA2 ? Minus the small glitch here and there I love mine.

I have finished up some wiring issues and installed an equipment fan in the closet. Now I can completely close the door during use. I spend a lot of time in the new HT . I need to upgrade the HTPC for internet viewing again. Guess a new video card is in order maybe ?

Your HT is coming along nicely. Johnathan
post #130 of 237
Johnathan,

Sounds good. I'm pretty happy with the 333 but its been awhile since I've seen it in action I sure hope it stands up to the 2 new 1080P samsungs I have in the other 2 HT's. I'm liking the XA2 so far.
I'll be toying around with a new HTPC next but I may save that for after the fall to mess with and just enjoy what I have before getting on the next project right away.

Cheers

I don't have to tell you how hard it is to get a screen shot that conveys the screen image. Here are a couple real quick. I need to find the same scenes but haven't yet. Johnathan

These are of the same SD DVD ! I will get some HD DVD shots shortly!

Are those pictures of the xa2?

Yes that is the XA2 with SD DVD and the RS1 . Here is the XA2 with HD DVD and RS1. Almost too much detail ha ha. For the photography purist these photos have been slightly edited to try to reproduce what I am seeing.I used levels, and ever so slight unsharp mask to corect for the softness of the 17-40L lens. Johnathan

The top image more closely represents what I am seeing on screen.
Edited to compensate for the less than steller exposure level !

Straight from the camera just resized.

Im not seeing the pics ,anyone else?

Wow the first ones you posted are amazing, Im in the process of getting a HD DVD player and i am starting to lean towards the XA2 more and more.I havent started a HT yet but i have a small dedicated room im am setting up to watch movies with the family.I hope to learn alot more as the next year goes by and buy my equipment along the way and when i get my house next year i hope that i will be able to come up with a HT that will make me and the family as happy as it seems that those of you that have or in the process of having are. So you may see me trolling around asking a million questions as time goes on..Thanks for the reply by the way.

Pics look great. Nice job capturing it actually I know how hard it is to capture film well I usually take about 40 pics and have 1 or 2 that are somewhat decent and worth posting. The shots you've taken look impressive colors are very good great PQ (I've always been impressed with the "Riddick" movies they might not be the best movies going but their PQ and audio have always been top notch in my book.
Looking good Johnathan now I just have to make it down there one day to see it in person - Have to find a way to get the company to send me to Texas for some "training"

Cheers

Thanks Guy's
Calvin the reason you adjust the picture is sometimes the camera will use part of the photo to expose on that is too light or dark ! This in return doesn't give the result that you are looking for. Or the in person view if you will .

I will keep trying different exposures and metering settings to get it right ! But the top photo is very close ! Come buy any time ha ha . I have traveled a little in Canada and loved it. Toronto,Calgary "Banff" and Vancouver . A very clean and friendly country ! Johnathan

Johnathan,

Well add Edmonton to your list to visit in Canada
I'll have to get your camera settings so I can perfect that - I'm pretty lazy I don't use manual anymore just click it on auto and shot till I get something that looks ok

Cheers

The 119" screen is larger in the room than I had guessed. But that is a good thing. It really fills up the wall !

Just the screen and front L/R speakers for now. Man I am getting excited.

I will get better pictures tomorrow during the day.The room is very dark. And eats up the light. Johnathan

Very nice indeed, this is probably about as complex a theater setup I would ever try to achieve. Looks very nice John from that view really looks like you are in a real theater, nice colors also
post #142 of 237
Congrats to you on your hard work and obviou success on an awesome theater room. Did it turn out as you had envisioned? Always nice to have an idea and see it play out the way you wanted (although im sure the thumb injury wasnt part of the plan, but a small price to pay, right? )

Quick question. What is the distance from the screen to all the different seating areas? And its a 119' screen, correct?

Again, congrats

Thank you for your post and compliments !

It came out better than I had planned. And the performance was a big surprise. The dark non reflective colors really helped out. The lighting is a pleasure and the sound is better than it has ever been with this equipment !

The front row is 9'6" eyes to the screen and the rear is 15' to 16' depending on the level of recline. The front row is very imersive but my favorite seating is the rear row ! Thanks again guy's. Any other questions fire away. Johnathan

Wow, I love the job you've done. My wife and I might be moving to the Dallas area once she finishes school so I might look you up and pick your brain since this is exactly the type of project I want to undertake. Great work!

Very, very nice setup. Clean, not overly complex. Great setup for someone who didn't have the benefit of starting from scratch.

I also dig the paint, what color is that?

Thank you ! I was lucky enough to find "Scout" at the dog shelter where I live . He had heart worms and was in quarantine .To tell you the truth he was on his last leg. No one wants to take a dog that needs treatment and special care.

I took him home and sheltered him for a year until he was clear of heart worms after treatment. Funny thing they will not adopt out a sick dog ? But when he was well I formally adopted him. He is a great companion and friend ! A very gentle loving little guy. I think he appreciated us and the new home.

He is with me every movie ! And he gets very excited to see me fire up the popcorn machine ha ha. Johnathan
