I am definitely considering buying this new HSU sub. This is pretty much the price point and specs I wanted. his jumped out at me though, the amp is only 350 w continuous. I mean, I know that since it's ported that it doesn't need to have an amp with crazy wattage but that still seems a little weak.

Also what do you think of the new HSU versus the Rythmik FV15. The price really isn't that different. The HSU is a good bit bigger while probably having an inferior amp (and Rythmik even offers an upgraded amp).

http://www.rythmikaudio.com/FV15_specs.html

PS - don't ignore the shipping cost, it's hardly cheap.

I wonder if they would give me a break on the shipping if I blind ordered one. I am a HSU customer and I did just pay 120 bucks plus 2 way shipping to have my HSU amp repaired.

My understanding is that it is not an introductory price....that IS the price.

Curtis..is that in half space? (Ground plane?)

Pretty unbelievably efficient if it is!
Like, holy wow efficient!

There is a sealed mode.

Size: 25" x 18" x 26" HWD add 1" for feet and 1" for grille.

FR ground plane is 15-200Hz +-2dB

and for you output junkies: 123-125dB max clean CEA2010 peak output capability from 40-100hz, 121dB@31.5Hz, 118dB@25Hz, 114dB@20Hz (these are with both ports open @ 1 meter).

The kicker....$879 in matte black....$999 in real wood veneer!! The fit and finish on both were excellent!

I won't put much into rated amp specs, their is more to it than that.

like cschang said, it was measured at 1 meter instead of 2 like on the graph.

So I wonder what the specs really are.

I would not put much weight on amp power on any sub purchase.

Output is based on other factors, and without knowing them, amp power is virtually meaningless.

You just subtract 6dB from the measurement.

Is this a HSU designed woofer as well, doesn't look anything like the ULS-15 that's for sure.

OK, we'll throw the amp out of the argument. It still seems pretty similar in price point and features to the Rythmik. I'm just saying that off the top of my head, that Rythmik is probably it's closest competitor. Didn't know what you guys thought. Especially you, cschang, since you probably have some kind of experience with Rythmik being on the Ascend forums.

I have no experience with the vented/ported Rythmiks.

Yeah Matt...I posted earlier that the driver is completely designed by Dr. Hsu from the ground up.

I just got back from the HSU open house, and I was very impressed by this subwoofer!

The quality, output and performance at this price point is incredible.

I really love the way it looks, even though it is on the large side for my taste.

Thanks for posting Curtis, good meeting you.

isn't it true that sitting half the distance from something will increase your db by 6 db.

No you subtract 6db per meter.

Still darn pretty amazing!

Did he have a chance to measure it outdoors or was that simulation based off of the peak power rating?

You guys are right...I fixed my post.

The product description I have says "measured outside".

I am off to a dinner party....

Much appreciated Curtis!

Have fun!

Exciting stuff!

VTF-15H

I put in a request for one in Rosenut. I had to do it via email since the order form online is for the US only.
The shipping cost is pretty good. Going by the weight spec on the VTF 15H page of 123 lbs, that's more than resonable . Impressive numbers., unique look. Looks like a winner.
Oh wow!,
the design looks great. Not to mention the db performance!
Shoot,i'm gonna have to wait for more reviews before i buy my new sub.
Hope some one poste a youtube video of there review.
Thanks for the kind words everyone! On the Hsu Research forum I have posted all the info that was provided at the Open House.

Just to clarify, the standard finish is [non-vinyl] Satin Black, not Matte Black.

Sincerely,
That is one sexy looking sub. Looks like I will for sure put my VTF-3 MK3 up for sale, I wonder if they take trade ins?

How is this different from the current HSU ported subs or SVS subs where you lose some headroom with lower tuning?

15" custom driver for starters.

I think the numbers posted do reflect that, but it apparently still packs a wallop.

The VTF-15H has seriously good output capability. Dr. Hsu only demoed a single unit for most of the day at the Open House, and even that was scary from the next two rooms over. To put things into perspective, one would need ULS-15 DualDrive to match/exceed the max clean output capability of a single VTF-15H at all frequencies from 16-100Hz. In turn, one would need ULS-15 QuadDrive to match/exceed the max clean output capability of VTF-15H DualDrive at all frequencies from 16-100Hz. But hey, it is twice the size of the ULS-15 too!

The VTF-15H amplifier is very good, runs cool to the touch, and has the highest short-term amp power in it's class (based on our internal measurements). In addition to an Operating Mode Switch (EQ1 = '0/1 port open', EQ2 = '0/1/2 ports open'), there is a brand new continuously variable Q control (0.3 through 0.7) that allows one to adjust the low frequency rolloff to give flatter in-room response and/or higher headroom. This Q control in combination with support for five different [ported and sealed] operating modes means that one can have potentially dozens and dozens of different frequency response curves to choose from with this subwoofer.

Sincerely,

That's right Curtis. The VTF-15H driver/amplifier/enclosure/ports/grille/feet were all designed from the ground up.

I love the fact that Dr. Hsu never stops exploring new ways to improve his subs. The triangular slot ports are just plain cool.

Wow thats insane... allowing someone to tweak the subwoofer exactly to their liking is probably the right direction to go.
