With the sub in B its right next to the couch. I have about maybe 2 feet of space to the wall. Is it better to have it closer to the wall? Which way should the ports face?
Put it close to the wall if you can...You can put the ports looking at the open space in the room...

Straight out or angled into the room?

Never hurts to try...but i'd say straight. Put it in the corner.

I'd say leave a gap of about 10 inches from the wall. That way you still get corner placement benefits and the sub is as nearfield as possible, giving you the best of both worlds.

FYI, Dr HSU recommends at least 3" clearance. Sounds like you have it, but thought I would add the min distance.

My wife is even on board with this new addition now and trust me, that's high praise. Have no fear, unless you have a gigantic room you're going notice a big improvement.

Thanks for getting me even more amped! I have a room thats 18x18 and ten feet high. With openings to kitchen and hallway!!!!! I hope it is still enough to blow my roommates away (two girls who barely put up with my polk towers until they heard how great they sounded!). Can't wait for it to arrive, probably have to wait till after christmas for FedEx to give me my new toY!!!!!

I know I'm a bit late, but just wanted to add my two cents that "War Of The Words" Chapter 5 (emergence scene) is still how I show off my VTF3.3 to people. The floor literally moves. The whole movie has great bass, but that one scene (from the ground cracking to the death-ray part) has several different kinds of bass in close proximity, so it's a really fun show-off demo.

Could not agree more! Awesome scene to demo/showoff a sub(s).

I realized (after you quoted me of course) that my links went to the DVD waterfalls, so I updated to a new link for the blu-ray.

I appreciate Dr. Hsu and his family for allowing me to meet with them during their vacation. Here are some pictures we took with my family and Dr. Hsu.

Hi Daniel!

That is very cool that you met Dr. Hsu! Awesome sub, by the way. I was curious to know how much it cost for you to ship that to Oahu? I also live here (Waipio) and am hoping to buy the VTF-2 MK-3, but I got a quote from Hsu Customer Service for $250 to ship to Hawaii There's gotta be a cheaper solution. Paying $250 to ship a $500 sub is hard to swallow.

Quick question. Is the Hsu satin black finish a smooth finish or is it textured? Most of the photos I have seen appear to be older ones that show a textured finish. I prefer a smoother finish lik eon the new Emotivas and was wondering how the Hsus are now.

The subs are smooth. Might be some of the grainy pictures that might make it look textured. I don't think Hsu makes textured subs anymore if ever.

Shipping for the VTF-15H was around $377. Nice to see another islander on AVS.

When HSU released the VTF-3R (rosewood) around '04, they talked about releasing one with an all piano black finish. Does anyone know if it ever came to market? I would love to get one to compliment my 3-R.

Hi Everyone,
Im new to the forum....but after reading reviews for weeks(on this site) I decided to purchase a HSU Stf-2. I have a fairly large room (19X19X8), so I was concerned if it would be enough sub to fill the room. It is PLENTY! I have the gain at the 10 o'clock position on the sub, and its only turned about a qtr of the way on my receiver. The sound and feel is phenomenal! I just wanted to thank everyone who has posted about these speakers, it exceded all my expectations.

Hope u calibrated with a spl meter?

I sent my STF-3 amp in to Hsu for servicing last week after it stopped producing any sound from my 6-year old STF-3. It turns out the capacitors need replacing and I'm told this is fairly common. Now I have not used the sub very much the last few years as I was busy renovating a home and before that, the sub was hardly driven because I was in a 700 sq. ft condo. Is 6-years about the average life expectancy of capacitors? Because I'm in Canada, the shipping costs make this a bit more of a costly fix and I've owned power amplifiers that have lasted over 10-15 years without any problems, so I'm curious about whether the caps in Hsu amps have a shorter life span?

Thanks!

I did indeed! Its the first time ive used one, but i think i did it correctly. I set my meter to "c" weight, slow, then adjusted all speakers using the test tone to 80 db at 0 volume on receiver. I ran the sub about 3 db higher. Sound right? Thanks

I was wondering if anyone has the FR plot of the STF-2. I like to know how high the STF-2 can go. I am not very concerned about 3db response or directionality of the sound.

I checked the HSU web site and owners guide but I don't see the plot. I am looking for the plot like the one shown on SVS web site for the PB10 NSD.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Pretty much! One crazy workout for your new sub is 'Flight of the Phoenix' when the plane is going down and doing twists the sub activity is ridonkulous!

Hello all,

I am trying to decide between the HSU STF-1 or the STF-2. This is going to be for my bedroom and my room size is 10x10x10. It is going to be used for roughly, 75% music and 25% HT. My budget is either the STF-1 or STF-2. I am thinking about the STF-1 because my room is small and I don't want to spend extra money on the STF-2 if I'm just going to end up leaving it at lower volume. I am not worried about future proofing since I will probably upgrade to something bigger if I am.
The STF2's real advantage is deeper frequency extension. The STF1 rolls off at 32 hz while the STF2 rolls off at 25. Depending on what movies you watch, it might be worth it to go for the STF2, but music rarely digs low enough to take advantage of its extension.
Well, i do mainly music so i should just stick with the stf-1? I also forgot to mention i live in an apartment so i wont be able to play movies that loudly. Would i hear a big difference from the sub going down to 25hz compared to 32hz? I dont even know what that 7 extra hertz would sound like.

I post to add my enthusiastic vote for using the BD of War of the Worlds soundtrack as a demonstration disc to showoff a Hsu sub. I watched it last night and despite the film being even sillier than I had remembered, the soundtrack, particularly the LFE channel, is awe inspiring. I still shake my head at how a Spielberg film of this classic H.G. Wells story could have been so bad, despite its visual beauty and world class sound. Maybe it was the Tom Cruise effect. Spielberg cast three past and future Oscar winners, Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins, and Amy Ryan, so what was he thinking when he choose Cruise as his star?

I should add that my sub is a VTF-3.3 Turbo.
