where to get blue filter

hello all. i finally got a hold of the DVE calibration disk from our local library, but the filters are gone. so i was able to calibrate (or at least tried to!) brightness, contrast and sharpness. but for color, i need the blue glasses right? i checked out the thx site, but unfortunately, the promo for the free glasses is done. where else can i get these blue filters? on the site, it did say that it should be included in every thx certified dvd. im not sure what that is though.

Just buy a pair of the THX glasses. They're not that expensive. I Think I paid $1 or $2 a piece for them.

Depending on the display technology ... the blue filters may not work right anyway.

The filters were designed for CRT based technology ...

While better than nothing ... sometimes ... they are worse than nothing. The find check is always with know fleshtone patterns and iamges.

The THX "glasses" are available form their THX store (the web site is currently under re-contruction). I just found a reference here: http://www.thx.com/search.html?glbl_...optimizer&pg=1. I was able to get to a site where it said "under construction". The second time I tried it, it didn't work at all (keep checking, it should come back on-line soon).

When I checked last week, the "glasses" were $1.00 plus S&H (and tax, if in California).

You can aslo get the DVE filter card (Blue, Red, & Green filters on a single card) from here: http://www.videoessentials.com/extra_filters.php.

I thought I would share a recent finding for you all to consider. The "blue filter" that comes with Digital Video Essentials (DVE) yields different calibration results when compared to the "THX glasses". I tried them both with DVE and GetGray calibration disks using an Oppo 981HD and a Sony KDL-46XBR3 LCD and also on INHD's "Tuneup" broadcast on Sunday mornings via my Comcast cable.

I find I like the DVE filter results better in all cases. Personally, I would use the link above and order the DVE filter for $3.00 and a stamp. They are just different blues.

Actually, the DVE "Blue" is not correct, since it is not the equivalent of Kodak "Deep Blue Tricolor #47B" (it is a darker blue). As you noted, however, it may give better results on some displays and to some "eyes". The correct Lee filter, BTW, is "Tokyo Blue #071", for those of you who have access to the Lee Filter set.

The correct filter numbers (for all 3 filters, as determined by several AVS members) are:
Kodak (used by AVIA and DVE - except for the blue):
Deep Blue Tricolor #47B
Deep Red Tricolor #29
Deep Green Tricolor #61

Lee Filter equivalents (their "Primary Blue" is the wrong color, it's not dark enough):
Tokyo Blue #071
Primary Red #106
Primary Green #139

NOTE: On my displays, I do not get a different Color & Tint setting using the AVIA, DVE, or the THX "glasses" filters. I use the GetGray Caldisc, although I also have the AVIA DVD and the DVE DVD.

Thanks for pointing that out, I knew one wasn't right but could only guess as to which one. On my set I definitely get two different results using the DVE "blue filter" and the "THX glasses" using GetGray Caldisc. Are you saying if I use the "THX glasses" and the GetGray Caldisc together I would probably get a truer calibration? Maybe I'll give it a try and give myself a chance to get used to it.

That's the combination that I use, and it works quite well.

Try it and watch for a week to see what you think of the PQ (with DVDs). Then go back to the DVE filter (with GetGray Caldisc) and see if it still looks "better" to you.
