Ran into my first problem with my HTPC Build

I got all my components, and put the computer together last night. It was a barebones system since I had most of the other parts already so it wasn't difficult at all. I go in and begin to install xp, hit f6 to install a sata driver. A Floppy came with the system so I thought not problem. I follow the directions and everything goes find and setup begins. Well during the setup/formating of the partition I get a the follow error occurred. M.5287.sys can not be found do you want to try again or skip etc. Well this is the data driver file and for whatever reason its not being found. If I skip the computer blue screens, any suggestions, I may end up using an IDE drive.

The driver should've already been loaded by that point. I'd make sure you're initially loading the correct driver, and leave the floppy disk in the drive during the whole process. If that fails, hit the Asus website for the newest version of the drive, copy it onto another floppy, and try loading that instead.

Oh, and when you hit F6, I assume you're getting the dialog box that lets you go look for the file, right? Your post doesn't say exactly, and I just want to rule out the possibility that you just hit F6 and figure XP will automatically find and load that driver for you.

I am going to try a couple of things. First I'll do like you mention and get the lastest driver and put in on another floppy. I am also going to try using a program called nlite to merge the driver with the windows xp install and create a new install disc.

Wait...sata driver required? I built a systen recently with sata drives and no F6 driver load from a floopy was required for sata. Are you sure your floppy disk has just RAID drivers? Is the step necessary to load from a floopy?

I think that floppy is for the RAID driver. You should be able to install WinXP on a SATA drive if it isn't set up as a RAID array. I had no problems installing WinXP on any of my systems with a SATA drive.

I tried not putting the floppy in and not pressing f6, but when I get to the screen where it list the hard drives it say unknown device or something like that.

I believe you are right about the diskette having the raid drivers.
Go into your bios and make sure you have sata support turned on.

I'm trying the disc I made from the asus download to see if it works, and it was just a bad floppy. I let everyone know how it turns out.

Using the Nlite software to merge the driver onto the xp install cd seems to have worked thankfully. Thanks everyone for their help.

Hey, i liked your solution and followed the link to this app. its very neat actually. i am in a similar situation and need to add some sata drivers to an xp mce install. i am doing the nlite step by step guide for adding drivers. My question: what MODE did you use to add the drivers? There is either "regular PNP drivers" or "textmode drivers" Which did you choose and whats the diff between the two?

Sorry for the long time responding I honestly don't remember off hand which I chose. I think I just left it on whever was the default, or chose the text mode drivers. I don't know the difference between the two, but I think it explains it on the site. Try the text mode first I believe thats the right one.
