Help Needed: Center Channel Amp Selection

First post here.....

I have been doing lots of research and I've decided to try and not purchase a new av receiver and hdtv until later this year. I think the 1.3 HDMI might be worth the wait since I only update every 10-15 years on equipment.

Instead I decided to upgrade my +15yr old home Infinity speakers and the current inexpensive (but not bad sounding) amplified AudioSource center speaker.

Sooo, replaced the front l/r speakers with new Infinity Beta 40 speakers and I just received the Infinity Beta 360 center (believe people when they say that puppy is big!).

Now the real question. What is a good quality amp, wallet friendly, that will work well with the Infinity center channel speaker?

When I run searches I find all kind of info on expensive amps and amps to use with subs, but haven't found anything on this topic.

If it matters, av receiver is the Onkyo TX-SV50Pro with a Center Pre-Out.

As I recall Infinity speakers are pretty easy to drive, so I don't know why the receiver you have does not do the trick on the center speaker. But if not, you may want to consider a separate multichannel amp to handle all your speakers (except the sub) and that way you can get a receiver or pre/pro with the features you want without worrying about the amps. I have nice one for sale - PM me if interested.

I like to really give the Center a lot of power and headroom. I am considering an Audiosource AMP 300 from JR. 400 watts bridged. I use in essence 200watt mono blocks one each for the rest of my channels.

I don't think I have seen a better deal on a power amp with warranty than this one tailored for home audio applications.

The Infinity literature says 10-200 watts on all three of the speakers. However, I doubt the low end would produce much depth of sound.

Receiver has a preamp out on the center channel, therefore the question about amps.

Thanks, but not interested in a multichannel amp. I took a look at the brochure for my current receiver and it provides 70watts x 4 and I rarely ever remember having the volume higher than mid dial.

Of course, I may be missing something since it seems like receivers continue to bump the available wattage at set price points. Might be it's like motorcycles, you don't really need the size engines that have become available over the years, but it sure is fun.

Thank you for the reply and sorry I haven't responded sooner, but your link really set me in motion. (By the way I'm John also except mine would say nHighlands Ranch)

I had looked at the AudioSource amps prior to posting and that was the route I figured I'd go before I said, what the heck, put a post on the forum and see what other, more knowledgeable folks, recommend. It's good to know I was looking in the right direction.

Now for the results. After doing some additional googles I was prepared the buy the AudioSource 200 Stereo Power Amp/Refurbished for $130 plus something like $27 shipping from J&R. Just as I was going to hit the old "add to cart" button I thought I should just check on the receivers I had been considering and see what was happening with their prices.

Checked out the future proof receivers listed in another posting here on the forum and they were still outside my budget. Then I looked at the Onkyo TX-SR674, my first choice before reading the previously mentioned post, on the J&R website and discovered it was on sale for $540 with free shipping included.

My brain is now whirring; $540 for the receiver minus the $160 for the amp means it's only costing me $380 to have a shiny new receiver (I know, I know, it's just how I'm justifing my decision). For $380 I think I can face upgrading, if it become necessary, again in 5 years instead of my typical 10 year average (I'm not a gamer so don't need the 7.1 HDMI PCM now).

Note: The Onkyo web site indicates the TX-SR674 provides 95 watts to the center channel so the amp no longer a requirement.

Long story short, I just ordered the Onkyo minutes ago. The only down side, it's not in stock so it won't ship for a week to 10 days. At least that what Rick at J&R told me. I hope they aren't blowing smoke my way because once I pick my candy I want it NOW.

Thanks again for the help and pointing me toward, albeit indirectly, my decision.

P.S. I just had to remove the JOHNnDENVER url because I have fewer than five posts. Just look back in the thread for the link if interested in looking at the amp he was suggesting.
