$40 wireless IR extender that is Plasma freindly

Hello everyone,
I thought I'd share this with everyone. I had wireless IR extender that I used to control a DirecTV Tivo unit in another room. It's a Terk LF-IRX that I got at Circuit City for $40.

It worked pretty good too. Well I recently bought a new Panasonic Plasma (TH-42PX60U) to mount on a wall in my bedroom and I wanted to hide the bedroom DirecTV Tivo unit, an X-box 360 and a Reciever in the closet out of sight. I thought I'd use the Terk to do this, but it didn't seem to work. After doing some research and looking at other IR extenders I saw that I needed one that was labeled "Plasma Friendly". I also noticed that they were a little expensive. About $100 for the cheapest up to a couple hundred bucks for the fancier models. And these were the wired ones.

I was all set to get the Hot Link Pro Remote Control Booster System ( 8225P ) from Amazon. I saw that it's instructions said that it is "Plasma Friendly", you just have to place the IR "Eye" behind the TV. The IR signal from the remote will bounce off the wall and hit the "Eye". This way the "Eye" is not in the way of all the interference coming off of the TV screen.

This made me think, I wonder if I can take the Terk reciever apart and place it's "guts" behind the screen, just like the Hot Link Pro. Well the Terk came apart super easy. Just 4 screws on the bottom. Inside was a little circuit board with the Eye and an LED to let you know it's received a signal. The port for the power cord is attached to this also and came out along with the board with no problems. All I did was plug it in and place it behind the screen with the Eye pointing up.

It worked like a champ! And I did all this so that I can put it behind my wall mounted set. You might not have to if yours is used on a stand. I'll post pics as soon as I find my camera. This may not work for everyone, but it might be worth a try before spending all the money on an expensive wired kit.
