I would say the mix on the DVD-A is rather a mixed bag. I agree with the "U" shape, but it seems the left side gets 70% of the soundstage, which robs the whole frontstage. There is barelly anything in the middle other then solo voices and very few intruments. I noticed this on the original CD I had for years as well, and I was hoping this new set "corrected" that approach, but I guess it was a wishful thinking on my part. The other 2 installments were free from this, so I'm looking forward to those. I just ordered the Two Towers, and the Return Of The King should be out soon as well. Just read a brief review of it in S&V magazine's "tracking surround".
