Using used Cablevision boxes with new service

is it possible for me to go out and buy cable boxes that are compatible with cablevisions digital cable? Will these possibly used (buying from ebay and craigslist) work with the new cable service I have? I want to return the boxes they gave me and not pay the rental fees they charge each month. Now I know that these digital cable boxes use cards so can I just return the boxes and keep the card and just place the card in the new box that I buy?

while I have to shell out the cash NOW, its better than shelling out the high rent fees per month for a lifetime. Close to 50 bucks a month to rent these boxes. Thats almost 600 bucks a year. In total I can get all these boxes for 400 to 600 anyways. This way in year 2 and on I wont have to pay almost 50 bucks a month to rent the boxes. Anyways why not waste the money? Have you experienced anything similar?

To answer your question: No, you cannot do this yet.

No cable company in the United States will activate a box you buy off eBay or craigslist. Also, a box that you buy off the internet is either (a) stolen or (b) Canadian, so you may be getting into murky territory if it is stolen.

After July 7 (I believe) cable companies are set to be required by the FCC to separate the security devices from their cable boxes, paving the way for third-party boxes/equipment to be able to communicate with the cableco networks. One implementation of this is using cableCARDs in boxes, like you said. The cable companies are challenging the July date in court though.

How on earth does is cost you almost $50 to rent two cable boxes? I've never heard of anything like that.

Anyway, no, you can't use a box you buy off the interwebs.

You're right, I don't know why I thought two. Even for six, $50 is still higher than I would expect. Bummer. Anyway... I think the chances of the July thing actually happening are slim to none. The cablecos are NOWHERE near ready for something like that (as written this FCC regulation would cause cablecos to basically have to replace a large portion of their box inventory as well as do some work on their networks). I anticipate some sort of injunction or extension stemming from the court challenges. It's a stupid ruling from the FCC. CableCARD technology is horrible and is nowhere near as reliable as the cableco equipment.

darn it. Well I guess I'll figure out something. After all, if the bill could drop down by almost 50 bucks a month, that would be a big relief! Wish i was lied to by cablevision. We were ok with sat. Granted when it rained we were screwed and when it snowed I had to go up and clean the snow off all of the sats. But thats no more than 20 or so time sa year total. Not that big a deal. God I hate it when people lie to you or at best the sales rep was an idiot and didnt know the difference from x and blue. Whats done is done and im stuck with cablevision overprices bill.

Geez they sure do know how to get you with the surcharges and fees. To top it all off, the signal is pretty weak from what I thought it would be. We get the occasional pixalated signal loss but thats rare though, for now! Cant wait for FIOS to fully arrive. They gave me a quoted price of almost 20 bucks less and I get more movie channels. Although they tell me it may take a year or longer to fully arrive in brooklyn . They do have service in staten island though

My STB rental is $4.95/month for each additional. Sounds like you are really getting the shaft...

Even $4.95 seems high to me...

If your DBS was cutting out 20 times in a year in anything less than thunderstorms - then you didn't have a good install.

i figured it was the norm with having sat TV! If it wasnt then i just made a huge mistake switching over from dtv to cablevision. Then again when you are promised a certain price and then find out the quoted price was pure BS, its too late. I already paid a fortune in install fees and discontinued the DTV account. Gotta love it when people fool you into getting thier service and when you try and relay this to anyone at IO, they pretty much say you are a liar. To make matters worse, i was told the NFL network was going to be on in november of 06 and to my suprise, its still not available on cablevision. WOW! The hell with this. Im going to go out and buy the boxes and have some way of using them. I dont caree if I have to install a bomb in them to get them to have cable tv service with cablevision, im going to do it. Then im going to take the boxes I have and throw them in the faces of the reps at the local center. Hopefully I break a few noses and save almost 50 bucks i fees.! I HATE CABLEVISION! I wish I had a tape recorder that day but talk about being to trust worthy! A Holes!
