Sony HD CRT to CPU

I have a Sony KV-32HS510 Direct-View CRT HDTV. I've done some research and learned to access the service mode, but don't want to go tinkering around in there blindly. Are there any options to allow display mode changes for HD Signals on that TV that anyone knows of? I would like to be able to switch to a full-screen via zoom or stretch on an HD signal. However, the TV currently automatically switches to a 16:9 mode automatically upon recieving such a signal. Occasionally, when watching an HD station I'll then have horizontal and vertical bars because I'm watching a 2:3 (or 3:4, I'm not really sure about the aspect) signal on an HD station. Also, I would like to have the option to view a DVI signal in full-screen mode (again, not sure on the aspect ratio, I think it's 3:4) for using my computer, but instead it gets stretched horizontally to fit the 16:9 ratio. Even if I assign my video card (Radeon X1900 CF Edition) to a widescreen resolution, I still get a stretched image, only the edges dissapear off the edge of the TV.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not aware of any way to force these Sony HD CRTs to use the full TV screen in any mode other than 480i or 480p. 720p and 1080i always switch to 16:9 mode.

Use the following info entirely at your own risk.

FWIW, if you want to expand 720p/1080i signals to fill the screen vertically, there are probably two ways you could handle that. The simplest is 2170D-3/JUMP, which just switches HD content between the regular condensed 16:9 mode and full screen display. If you need more finesse than this provides, then you could use 2170D-1/ASPT to custom scale the HD raster in a vertical direction. (Or you can use both controls.)

2170D-1/ASPT is signal and stretch mode sensitive to a degree. IOW, it can store different values depending on the signal (SD or HD) and stretch mode (Full, Normal, Zoom, Wide Zoom) being used. Most controls in the SM have special sensitivities similar to this, and will store multiple values. Or they may have even more complex relationships with other SM controls. So you shouldn't mess with other controls without proper guidance, documentation and advice, or you could screw things up something fierce on your TV. Also DO NOT be tempted to use any of the SM reset or reinitialization functions in the SM. Those will erase crucial factory adustments that'll make matters even worse, and require professional assistance to correct. (If you don't believe me, do a search on "reset", especially in the Sony SM thread, and you'll see what I mean). Make sure to write down the original values for each control before changing them in the SM so you can re-enter the old settings when needed. And note the type of signal, input, and AR mode as well.

The controls above (JUMP and ASPT) probably won't help with 4:3 content in HD broadcasts, because the picture will still be pillarboxed on the sides, and vertically stretched. Rectifying that within the SM gets more involved, and probably wouldn't be worth the hassle, since you'd be continually switching back and forth for 16:9 and 4:3 HD programming. So you're probably better off dealing with 4:3 broadcasts via your HD tuner's display/signal options.

JUMP and ASPT will probably be most useful if you're trying to scale 4:3 DVDs or video files to 720p/1080i via a PC or upconverting player, and you want the picture to fill the whole screen on your 4:3 TV.

If you think regular 16:9 720p/1080i HD broadcasts look too compressed in the default 16:9 HD display mode, ASPT could probably also be used to slightly tweak/correct that.
