47" Westy 1080p question

Hey all,
I tried searching but the thread on this set is so HUGE I couldn't really find what I was looking for. I just bought the 47" Westinghouse 1080p set this week. Right now I'm using the component input for HDTV temporarily, and I have Adelphia (Comcast) service. I have been experiencing noise across the top of the screen on feeds that are non-widescreen when in Standard mode. Is this a common problem with this set or is it a feed issue? It looks like a white line with black flickering in spots. I can't believe that I need to live with this, but if I swap the set for another will it do any good? Any advice, input appreciated. I almost went with the Sony 46" XBR2 after seeing my dad's, but it was just out of my budget so I really want to make the Westy work. Thanks again.

I have the same problem... Same set, same Comcast cable. Went away for a while but now it's back. I'm looking for answers too. Thought it was a cable problem, but now I'm not sure.

Check the Official thread for this set. Someone answered my question there, apparently this is normal and the way to overcome is to use the "Fill" mode.

I don't know about this set, but some sets have an adjustment where you can extend the upper part of the picture slightly and get rid of this white line. I know on the Fujitsu you can do this.

Go into your Westy's menu and see if you have vertical adjustment. I had the same problem on my Olevia with Brighthouse Networks (Time Warner). But in the my menu under picture there is a vertical adjustment and I used that to get rid of it. Hope that helps

The noise you are seeing is part of the picture signal from your cable provider. It's not a problem with your TV. You don't see this on most TVs (by default) because overscan hides it. Most manufacturers apply digital processing to "zoom" the picture, cutting off the surrounding edges of the image.

If you TV has vertical adjustment, you can shift the picture up (or down) to hide the noise.

Only way that I've found to get rid of this on Westy sets is fill mode. Fill mode basically overscans by 10% on HD channels, which is not really very satisfactory, and then you have to remember to turn it off when watching SD channels (or they'll be stretched), which usually means having two remotes lying around at hand.

I'm learning to just live with it. I take comfort in the fact that my set is doing this because it does not overscan. This was, in fact, one of the reasons why I bought an LCD and specifically a Westy; I wanted to get the full picture, and now I am, warts and all.
